.....the reason being that they barred me from their facebook page the one and only time I ever posted on it enquiring about Kadi the tiger cub, if I am not good enough to contribute to their facebook page, then my pound notes are not good enough to go into their till, as far as I am concerned.

Welcome to the club, I got banned for inquiring as to where they were going to put certain new species, albeit quite sarcastically! :p
I haven't visited the place so I shouldn't comment on the state of the place but most reports and 90% of the pictures I've seen make the zoo seem less than appealing in my opinion!

As for Mr. Gill himself, yes he is very outspoken, takes one to know one perhaps, but I do not see what relevance the man's private life has to be discussed on zoochat, and as for his recent opinion on gay marriages, which I have no real opinion of myself as it does not concern me or interest me in any way,it should be remembered that Mr. Gill posted these remarks on his own facebook page, not that of the zoo, I also note that a few gay members of zoochat were quite right to be upset at his opinion, but perhaps they are using the Belle incident and criticising the zoo itself as a vehicle to get at Mr. Gill personally for making homophobic remarks.

I have no opinion on gay marriage? Really, in these enlightened times I think people should be allowed to marry who they want. :p
Yes, this has nothing to do with the running of his zoo but for those gay members who have visited SLWAP I feel they are entirely justified to be reviled by his comments and therefore should be discussed in thread but I don't think they are using this as an excuse to bash Gill over Belle's death.

Indeed Dean,

Alas, poor Yorik!, I knew him

I didn't know DG was actually Yorik on here until Zoogiraffe mentioned it. I do recall writing something about SLWP (baby rhino viewing charges?) a while ago when Yorik was posting here, and I had to give up with the conversation as no matter what I wrote something about he would read it wrongly and think the world was against SLWP.
Now you know why you could never win with that argument!

In a rare piece of good news from SL, the Babarusia baby born back in February is confirmed as another female and is now on show

had a look on their website and apparently they are getting 2 male sri lankan leopards from czech republic not long after the arctic wolves/overgrown huskies arrive?

The man cannot reside in the shades / tresses of Shakespeare's hair!
I knew HIM Horatio!

BTW: the babirusa breeding IS good news. :D

The Sri Lankan leopards have arrived (photo on parks Facebook)

Edit: Confirmed that they came from Jihlava and arrived on Saturday

..No wolves/huskies yet though ;)

How did they get Sri Lankan Leopards? Sorry if it this has been mentioned earlier, but I didn't see it. Is there an exhibit for them?

I believe they are two male leopards and they have been moved into one of the big cat set ups on the new site near the lions new enclosure. Can anyone confirm? This leaves tigers and jaguars to have free run of the existing two enclosures without having to share and the snow leopards free run of thee closure they used to share with the lions. Looking forward to seeing them!

Surely they cant have 2 male Leopards in the same enclosure unless they are really young. My local "zoo",Yorkshire Wildlife Park, had 3 brothers who were reaching maturity and had to be kept in separate enclosures at all times for risk of them doing serious harm to each other. These are Amur Leopards, but surely the same rules apply to Sri Lankan ones too?
I was at South Lakes a few weeks ago and saw the new enclosures in the later stages of construction.Landscaping and tree-planting was taking place. But I didn't see anything remotely resembling an enclosure with dense forestry etc suitable for a tree/dense scrub loving cat like these
Tinterweb says only about 100 captive animals world-wide,so quite a coup for Mr Gill. Just hope he has built an enclosure to show them off to their best and keeps them happy.

I've just checked the Facebook page... They are definitely two males and there isn't indication of how old they are from jihlava so wonder if they display any information on their website about the pair

I seem to remember Banham zoo previously had two male Sri Lankan leopards, that lived together even as adults. I don't think that had got anything to do with them being Sri Lankan, just individual temperaments.

It seems fairly common for a Zoo to bring in/be allocated two male Leopards which are litter brothers to start with and then for one to be replaced with an unrelated female later on. I think Banham may have eventually done that and Yorkshire is in the process too. Of course, as you point out, the males may have to be housed seperately before that happens if they don't get on as they mature. Twycross I think may be another current example with two sibling males?

Well, this has left me a little torn. I'd love to see them, but don't really want to go back to SLWAP any time soon.

Twycross had Diesel with Davidoff until Diesel was moved on, yes.

The Jaguars have also been moved to a new exhibit within the expansion. Levaing 1.0 Sumatran Tiger in the original enclosures and the exhibit next door empty for now

1.3 Grants Zebra have now arrived - The male came from Arnhem and the mares from Beekse Bergen.....

South Lakes marked the first anniversary of the death of keeper Sarah McClay, who died after being mauled by a tiger on May 24th, 2013 when a door within a staff building was left open (see graphic) in two ways:
  • Sharing an album of photographs from a guest's 'Carnivore Experience'.
  • Deleting all comments by the public on their Facebook page in reference to McClay's death.

Now why am I not surprised by any of this? God forbid Gill should show some compassion and respect for Miss McClay's family!
