South Lakes Wild Animal Park South Lakes / Safari Zoo Closure

I never said they were in charge of the animals, the born free captivity team, are working alongside and keeping a close eye on what is going on there

How are the Born Free Captivity team working alongside the former zoo owners? The Born Free group campaigned hard to ensure no further licences were granted so it would be good to know what their role actually is from someone who knows as you do. Keeping a close eye is one thing, working with another.

Why do you contact born free foundation yourself like I did, I never said either that they were working alongside the owners, don't jump on me

I am not jumping on you I was just asking a question as you said

the born free captivity team, are working alongside

Is any question an attack?

In any case I can't say Born Free are the first people I would contact about anything, given their stance that keeping all animals in captivity is wrong. I am not sure I would get an objective nor accurate answer.

Your choice

Born Free don't appear to have a 'Captivity Team' to contact.

They have a campaign coordinator for their captive animal agenda, who sits in their general policy group and a captivity research and policy manager, also in the same group. I think however you could realistically describe a loose gathering of them as an 'Anti Captivity' team.

There are more people in their PR department than there are researchers, which I guess reflects the reality of things in this agenda lead space.

Meet the Team

Which should really tell you everything...

Same with PETA.

We are not "jumping on you", we are asking you to back up something that you have little objective evidence for - considering they have a bigger PR department than actual researchers, I doubt that they actually give a hoot about what happens to those animals.

And, as ZooNews2024 points out, you said exactly that just before:

I have a suspicion it's jimmy's farm , one of there statements mentioned bears arriving in the next few weeks???
I haven't been keeping up with them (or visiting) as much as I'd like to, but it would be an excellent addition to their collection if they could pull off a species acquisition like this! It would also give them perhaps the best collection of bear species in the UK.

I rather hope it is as they will build them a good enclosure. I never thought SL should have been allowed Spectacled Bears, a comparative rarity, and didn't understand how they managed to acquire them. But they never bred them and it seems like their housing was less than ideal at least some of the time.

In the later years, their house looks very good :)

In the early days at least, and the only time I visited, it certainly wasnt.

Just driven past, two giraffe at the top house and baboons on the field. Finding the blanket silence from a (potential) new operator quite baffling, closed for nearly 8 months - wonder what the plan is.

If I was to be passing by is still possible to see rhinos from the perimeter? And are the rhinos still in any breeding programmes while the zoo is shut?

Anyone have any idea on what is left on site now? The Bull giraffe was supposed to move to another UK collection but I haven't heard of any arrival anywhere and the 0:3 were supposed to go to France but now with no social media from SL it appears very difficult to establish what is left.
Persumably the lions are still on site, the lioness would be 19yrs now and the male is 14yrs

Will probably have to euthanize them if nowhere for them can eventually be found. Not a bad end for them in the grand scheme of things, given that both of them have lived well past the age they could've expected to live in the wild.
