How did the butterfly oasis compare in size to butterfly hollow at Franklin Park Zoo? I haven’t been able to make it to Stone Zoo in a while but plan to soon.

franklin park’s is half cylinder shaped and very long. stone zoos is a domed in the shape of a circle maybe 1/6 in size compared to franklin. it feels cramped inside the dome at stone. can walk around the whole outside. didn’t take up much of the garden area outside of caribean coast. new entrance, souvenir shop/water closets and coastal aviary already felt cramped. this makes it more cramped in the beginning of the zoo. wish they’d space things out more and make larger enclosures for animals.

I totally agree with you on bigger animal exhibits. Sure there are some nice substantial sized ones like the wolf exhibit but others like windows to the wild and even the black bear exhibit are just too small.

markor to wolf are best in zoo. snow leopard is nice with height. crane area is big even halved for one black neck and whoopi pair

Yes I agree with you. The rest of the exhibits are a little to way to small and some of the exhibits aren’t even naturalistic especially windows to the wild and the bear exhibit which seems to have more rocks and tile then grass and trees.

Today, a zookeeper told me that they're getting a new female bald eagle from Florida soon, and they will renovate the exhibit in the meantime. Also, they are working with Alaskan Fish and Wildlife to try to get arctic foxes, but there's a lot of red tape, so they don't know if or when. Signage is still there for both species.

The original rock hyrax exhibit was empty, lights off, and the signage was gone. There are still rock hyrax in the old inca tern exhibit. Until recently males were in one and females were in the other. There appeared to be fewer overall specimens in the one remaining exhibit. This leads me to think that perhaps some animals were removed from the zoo, and the remaining ones are in one exhibit. It also makes me think that the original rock hyrax exhibit (that's now empty with no identifying sign) may be renovated or repurposed, but those are guesses on my part.

I sure hope that they heavily renovate the old rock hyrax exhibit for a new animal since it looks pretty bad. I think that it would be cool if they put fennec foxes in that exhibit or maybe tree kangaroos! The chances that this happens though are pretty slim though. I personally think that it would be great if they closed down the entire windows to the wild exhibits and heavily renovated the entire place and center the exhibits around one continent.

I heavily doubt that there are tree kangaroos available to many zoos currently, I would love to be wrong though.

I visited the zoo yesterday, and the old rock hyrax exhibit now displays long tailed chinchillas. We saw two at the top of the rockwork.

Also, the pond that houses the two crane species has been filled with water after having some groundwork done. New wires overhead deter wild birds from entering. The pond had been dry for a very long time.

Which hyrax enclosure? The former tern one? The chinchillas have been in the zoo New England collection for a couple years, they used to be ambassador animals

There were hyrax in the former inca tern exhibit. We only saw two. That exhibit makes it more difficult to see the hyrax with the glare on the windows and more space for them to hide. I also suspect that there are less hyrax than the used to be.

chinchilla can be seen at a pet store. highly dispointing much like when they had roaches near jaguar. happy hyrax have more space but the glare on those window pains is harsh. wish they brought the fennec fox from boston than chinchilas
