General Updates on the Stone Zoo:

Between October 12th, 2019, and January 5th, 2020, the Stone Zoo had a “LEGO Brick Safari” exhibit, hosted by T-mobile. There were 40 different animals made out of millions of LEGO bricks, including tigers, pandas, polar bears, elephants, and Tasmanian devils.

On January 26th, 2020, Stone Zoo, as well as Franklin Park Zoo donates 50% of their gate admission sales to the Victoria’s Bushfire Emergency Wildlife Fund

In early March, the zoo announced they received 6 Mexican grey wolves (all of whom are brothers) from the Wolf Conservation Center in New York. On April 17th, the wolves were introduced to their new home.

It was announced on May 26th, 2020, that the Stone Zoo will be reopening on May 30th to zoo members, and on June 4th to the public. Guests will be required to wear face masks, be 6 feet apart from each other, and (because indoor exhibits are closed, as well as hand’s in activities and the playground), guests will be required to take the “Outdoor Safari Path” which would go through select exhibits with those exhibits showing most of the animals in the zoo. More information can be found below.

Not really "zoo" news but it still happened at the zoo.

A utility truck was stolen in Boston and police chased until they lost sight of the vehicle. Then the vehicle was found at the parking lot of the zoo, which led police on another chase until the driver crashed the truck on a ramp onto Interstate 93.

In other news, a male black-handed spider monkey named Jay has been euthanized due to liver cancer in the last week of August. This was announced on the zoo's Facebook page.

On October 9th, the zoo announced on their Facebook that a female spider monkey named Maggie has also passed away. She had been at the zoo since 1995 and her cause of death was humane euthanization due to kidney disease and a decline in health.

Just looking into this zoo because I havnt heard much about it before. It looks like they held polar bears and then black bears in an exhibit near the entrance. However according to the map they no longer hold them. Does anyone know why such a major exhibit for a small zoo appears to have been left empty for the last couple years?

Where the spider monkeys elderly and are some left or has this severely impacted the local troupe?

EDIT: Both born 1989, arrived 1995 and now no black handed spider monkeys here anymore. See working Facebook page.

As of this summer, they still had a black bear. This means either it has died/left the zoo since the summer or it is still on exhibit. Don't know which though.

As of the summer, they had two black bears, so I'd be a bit surprised if both died already.

The zoo posted a picture of their black bear just 2 weeks ago on Facebook. I imagine it was just an error with the creation of the covid-era map.

I doubt so as well, simply stated that it was a theoretical possibility. With an animal as large as a black bear, that death would not go unnoticed and would most certainly be announced on the zoo's social media. Personally, I wouldn't mind the zoo phasing out the bears though because that is in my opinion the worst Exhibit in the zoo.

Bears will never be phased out of Stone (Major is the only reason the facility even exists). However I understood the black bear exhibit was only supposed to be temporary. Which I had no problem with. I understand the funding for the Sawmill Creek exhibit fell through (which at a minimum would have american browns, possibly NA blacks as well) but a better bear exhibit is long over due. Zoo New Englands master planning has for decades been notoriously unsatisfing. Always felt wolves/markhor/ old aviary/ Spot pond look out could have been better utilized, preferably for large marine bears

A new Bear Exhibit would serve the exact same purpose as phasing out- more so what I meant was no more bears in that Exhibit. Really I have no problems with some of Stone's wasted space, as the wolves are a hugely successful conservation program. My two big issues with Stone are the two inadequate exhibits they have left- Black Bear and river otter. Get new Exhibits for these two species, and you would then have an extremely solid zoo. I know some people also dislike Windows to the Wild, but I have no problem with those Exhibits as they are adequate housing for the small animals displayed there.
