Tiger quadruplets in Berlin zoo treated for knee problems

A Berlin zoo says four young Sumatran tigers are undergoing treatment for knee problems.

The quadruplets were born in the summer of 2018 and as they started to develop, zookeepers noticed abnormalities in the way the cubs ran, the Tierpark Berlin said Wednesday.

CT scans revealed all four tigers had knee misalignments that were causing cartilage damage.

That damage is now being treated, and an expert team is to sit down in the new year to discuss long-term strategies to help the tigers.

“We don’t want to just rely on our own judgement. We will sit down with other experts,” zoo manager Christian Kern said. “Animal welfare is our top priority.”

Aside from their knee problems, the animals – males Willi and Oscar and females Seri and Kiara – are doing well, exhibiting normal eating habits and playing with each other, according to the zoo.

The parents of the quadruplets, Harfan and Mayang, have lived at Tierpark Berlin since 2013.

Zoo Osnabrück announced today that their male tiger Argo will be exchanged with another male from France within the next week. Since Argo and Diana remained without cubs they assumed that Argo is infertile but tests proved the opposite. The main idea behind the move is to have Argo breed in France since his new partner will be younger.

Zoo Amiens announced that 1:0 Tilak will be moved to Osnabrück to be paired with Diana. This leaves 0:1 Menya. I wonder if Argo will pair up with Menya, or bound for a different location?

According to Osnabruck's press release it sounded like Argo would go the opposite way to Amiens. Tilak arrived yesterday, Argo is set to depart to France today

In Berlin (Tierpak) two of the 2018 born young tigers - Kiara and Willi - were put to sleep due to irreversible damages.

And as update on the previous transfer: Tilak and Diana in Osnabrück is not a success so far. They have been together for a couple of hours at times but Tilak tends to be aggressive towards her and right now lives in the tiny mother-kid-enclosure.

Chester Zoo have recently hinted at some news with a Tiger video. The Tiger featured is not Kasarna. Have or are Chester taking on a Male Tiger? It would be amazing if Kasarna could follow in the footsteps of her Mum Kiranna and become a prolific breeder. From memory Kiranna parented 10 Cubs.
