Something of a female bias this year...

Arnhem's litter is now confirmed as another pair of females. They have been named Lara and Janine

Slightly unexpected arrival - 0.0.1 born at Aalborg on 13th September (BatuEASTBERLIN2003 X KimROTTERDAM2000) in a first breeding for Denmark

Male, Kubu (B10/8/2011 Nias X Puna) was transferred from WHF to Thirgby this week

Help needed - best place to film Sumatran Tigers in Europe?

Hi All,

I hope I'm posting in the correct forum here.

I just wanted to reach out and ask if anyone could advise me on locations in Europe where I might be able to get video footage of Sumatran tigers.

Ideally I'm looking for places which closest resemble their natural habitat. While I realise that there won't be places in Europe which look the same as the Sumatran rainforest, I'd be very grateful if anyone could make a recommendation of zoos or parks where I might be able to film without enclosures or visibly man-made constructions in shot. The material will be used in a forthcoming film about deforestation in Indonesia, intended to highlight the plight of the Sumatran Tiger.

Thanks very much in advance, any help very gratefully received.

Matt

Male, Toba (NiasEastBerlin2003 X PunaHeidelberg2003) was moved from WHF to Haute-Touche Animal Reserve, France (aka Obterre Zoo) this week to form the first half of a new breeding pair

Move; 'Joao', 'Keisha' and Kinnara' (Krefeld, 2012 litter) all moved to the UK on the 14th November. The females 'Keisha' and 'Kinnara' stayed together and went to Welsh Mountain Zoo and the male 'Joao' went to Dudley Zoo to form the first breeding pair at Dudley since Sarah and Filon.

Other news, South Lakes' female 'Alesha' has apparently died after a choking on a lump of meat which went down her trachea. This leaves South Lakes with one male, Padang.

Female, Phuket (B11/2012, BintangPaignton2009 X KiaraHeidelberg2005) was transferred from Zoo Doue La Fontaine to Haute-Touche Animal Reserve, Obterre during December

The Praha cub (B28/7/2013 Falco X Surami) was PTS on 22nd January following a period of ill health. Translated statement from Prague's website:

Sumatran tiger cub today underwent a veterinary examination, which revealed serious hereditary diseases.
"For a baby tiger keepers noticed ailments subsided even after drug administration. We therefore decided to proceed to a detailed examination, which revealed cystic degeneration of the kidneys, "says veterinarian Zoo Praha Roman fluid. This inherited condition leads to irreversible changes in the kidneys, which causes failure of the function. It is known in domestic and feral cats and is not compatible with long life.

Tiger cub born female Surami 28th July 2013. Shortly before that, during the June floods, Surami repeatedly had to be put to sleep for two weeks and moved to the top of the area. Their young then refused to care enough, so he had to run for rearing assistance breeders. Before his birth and the first months of life were postponed due to increase chances of post-flood repairs Pavilion felines and terrariums.

We firmly believe that the disease tiger cub is the last sad events associated with floods.

Update 22nd January 2014
The health of the baby tiger suddenly deteriorated significantly. The baby stopped showing interest in food and water and were very exhausted. It enlarged painful belly and sunken eyes. The vet along with the breeders have decided to euthanasia.

Hi does anyone know the name of the tiger offspring (*2012) at the Zoo Parking? Must be a female cub. Parents are Tornade and Bagus.

Hello
I wasn't aware there had been another cub born at Parken in recent years until your post :D so thanks for the update... a quick look at Flickr reveals that she was born in October 2012 and her name is Jambi

By the way: Tierpark Berlin (Berlin East) received a pair of sumatran tigers in December 2013 from Indonesia. There are no informations about the age or from which zoo in Indonesia they came.

JAMBI (*2002 Dudley Zoo) and SHAKIRA (*2003 Berlin East) are still in Berlin East too.

Thanks for confirming they have arrived :) Described as two and five years old in the article below (although which is which isn't obvious)

Sumatra-Tiger: Gestreiftes Geheimnis im Tierpark - B.Z. Berlin

..Hopefully East Berlin can return to there former breeding success in the not too distant future with this pair :)

... and this year two Zoos in Germany will open enclosures for sumatran tigers.

Zoo Osnabrück will open this spring. They announced last year that they will get a female tiger from Zoo Warsaw/Poland. The male could be from Poland, too - Zoo Wroclaw or it will come from England.
Their old tigers TYCHO and THIKI died in March 2011 and December 2012.

Zoo Cottbus will open their enclosure this summer.

Female, Sutera (B18/7/2000 Ankor X Rachka) was PTS at Krefeld this week after being diagnosed with severe liver cancer..

Krefeld are now left with her former mate, Beludra who himself is said to be unwell

In Zoo Augsburg/Germany the male tiger JACQUES (B18/04/1999 Parc des Felins Auneau/France) was put to sleep this weekend.

The zoo hope to get a new pair.

Upcoming changes at Zoo Brno: The pairing of female, Satu (Dublin2004 Indah X Sigra) and male, Dua (Stuttgart2005 Tuan X Dumai) has been declared a failure after 5 years with no successful breeding..

In Mid-March they will be split up and a replacement male will arrive from Warsaw to pair with Satu (either Barry or Dandy from Warsaw's 2012 litter, Iban X Ratu)

Dua will be transferred to Drayton Manor in the UK who will then hold pure Sumatran's for the first time
