Taipei Zoo Taipei zoo news

Taipei and Singapore signed a MOU in June to collaborate on Pygmy Hippos (Choeropsis liberiensis).
This constitutes the possible beginnings of an SE. Asian cooperation on pygmy hippo. It might develop into a full SEAZA program if and when it gets regional endorsement.

Fact: Indonesia, Korea and Thailand also have quite good numbers and several succesfilm breeding groups of pygmy hippos.

The giraffes in Taipei are not pure reticulated, they found they are hybrid, at least descendants of Rothschild's and reticulated.
I suspect this might have something to do with recent accessoin to some Europe's EAZA zoo organisation programs and good cooperation with them. The original breeding pair was a Toledo born male (born 2000 generic rothschildi/reticulata) x Busch Tampa female (born 1981 - possibly a purebred, but assigned in the ISB as rothschildi/reticulata)/

Note: Busch Tampa did have the only verified import in the US from purebred rothschildi imported from the UK.

Do you know when the giraffes in Taipeh were genotyped and where the results of genetic research can be found?

6 (3.3.0) Edward's Pheasants (Lophura edwardsi) are ready to be transfered to Tapiei Zoo from Prague Zoo. It took 2 years to achieve this.
Arrived on 14 September 2023. Taipei also transfered a male Impressed Tortoise (Manouria impressa) to Prague Zoo on November 2022.

Prague zoo obtained a group of fresh Impressed tortoise hatchlings 15 years ago but all 4 turned out to be female when they grew up. The zoo searched for a male of this species in vain for years. Taiwan authorities seized an illegally held male and handed it over to Taipei zoo. Because his origin was illegal, it was hard to get export papers and bureaucracy took over 2 years. When he arrived to Prague, he had to spend 1 month in quarantine before he could join the female gang. The first 2 babies hatched on 4th June 2023.

Thanks for the details.

Regarding the Panda's at Taipei Zoo - are they maintained in a similar programme to the others outside of the PRC?

Taipei always wants to have their young pandas to be participated in international breeding programmes, but nothing has been succeeded. Currently Taipei has 3 Giant Pandas in Taipei zoo, all of them belong to Taipei, as Taipei exchanged Taiwan Serows (Capricornis swinhoei) and Taiwan Sika Deers (Cervus nippon taiouanus) with China in 2011.
