Taronga Zoo Taronga Update

i knew there was a male in wellington zoo but was unaware of the animal at Mogo. id always thought they only had siamangs, lar and (white cheeked?) gibbons.
anyway, last animal in a major australian zoo.
seeing the exhibit moat drained just gave me so many ideas for what a fantastic site for a new enclosure this would be.....does anyone remember when the gibbon island was actually used for squirrel monkeys, who promptly at the tree and were relocated?

i believe there is an even older male mueller's gibbon at wellington zoo and another at mogo. did i mention i saw one in the wild? ;)

didn't Wellington's one just die? I thought I read that somewhere (probably on here)

Gung is one randy young elephant!

As his keeper Lucy Melo rather delicately puts it (in today's newspaper), "...Gung has been very busy practising his breeding skills."

When it comes to having a baby elephant, we're gonna beat Melbourne!
(Waits for explosion from patrick!)

That's a very good sign. I think Melbourne will beat Taronga though, but only because Gung is so young. Of course, if Bong Su at Melb fails to deliver(metiphorically and literally speaking) then Taronga's in with a chance.

the langur exhibits is fantasic, it's grown alot since my visit last november- what a little rain and season can do!

The langur exhibit needs more langurs. It's been about 2 years and nothing is happening. .

yeh im a little miffed too by the lack of breeding, obviosuly bringing in more langurs would be a positive step forward. it is an incredibly large exhibit for just two animals, and it could be enhanced by adding some birds or some other species.
but for now it remains one of my favourite zoo enclosures, and the two langurs do generally put on quite a good show.
fishing cats and binturong are two species i think Wild Asia showcases particularly well, in comparison to most other zoos with these species

francois' langurs

on the francois' - these are not the most common langurs in zoos. taronga is trying to acquire additional females from china to form a 1.3 breeding group. however, the chinese will only export pairs, and one pair per year at that.

thus, taronga is trying to import an additional 2.2 animals. they would then form a bachelor group with the two additional males and once confirmed that the current male was mating with the females, the "surplus" males would be sent to another zoo for display (i'm guessing melbourne since they are the only other australian zoo honoring their commitment).

i imagine after that male has sired a few offspring they would switch breeding males until all three of the founder males have produced offspring in the taronga group.

if taronga can't get two pairs they plan on trying to acquire a surplus male from another zoo to pair with the bachelor or as a last resort the additional male will be offered to another overseas zoo with francois' to avoid housing a solitary animal.

unfortunately they are running behind schedule. the first pair was hoped to be imported late last year leaving early 2008 for another.

thanks patrick. I had no idea that it was so hard to obtain these langur. (I had a idea it wasn't easy).
Thats what i love about this forum, there is always someone in the know. I just wish there were posts purely about zoo issues not a pile of crap posts that turn to rubbish after a while.
the gay animal post is one example of that. How stupid. thanks for ending it Ben. stuff like that is going to detract more users than actract users.

Some times it appears that people are using this forum to argue just for the sake of arguing.

what kind of lousy attitude is that boof? how hypocritical!!! for starters you say you don't like people making "boring" posts, as if you like it to stay on topic, yet you yourself state something completely irrelevant to taronga zoo.

as for "gay animals" it may seem stupid to you but how do you know i don't own a gay animal? for your information my dog, dexter has a penchant for humping much larger male dogs heads. he also is small white and fluffy which only adds to the embarrassment. gay animals therefore might not be something that even hold vague interest from you, but it is an issue that is
intrinsically intertwined into my life. your probably no different to the people that say "nice dog.....do they make em' for men?"....

and as for arguing for the sake of arguing, thats soooo something someone who is asking for an argument says.

if you can't stand the heat boof...

You are right pat i apologise.
Been to any good zoos lately. I would love to here about them.
Pat your dog for me. He sounds sweet.

it was always going to be a difficult issue (obtaining more langurs) since taronga decided to found the breeding program based on the rarest (in captivity) sub-species of francois.

ha ha ha!! sorry, couldn't help myself there....(my dog really is gay through!)

in regards to the francois' langur issue it pretty much sums up the sort of stuff thats drives us nuts here on the forum.

here you have taronga who does not keep langurs, decide to import some for wild asia. for whatever reason it does not choose either of the two species already held in australia (by adelaide and melbourne) and instead chooses a "new" species. nonetheless, adelaide and melbourne both agree to phase-out their langur species in favor of the the ones taronga has not even yet acquired.

and after taronga acquires those langur, and before they so much as produce a single offspring adelaide has already pulled the plug and changed their mind.

i thought we are supposed to be fixing these problems that were so common in the past not making entirely new ones!!

its true, unfortunately. and you have taronga importing indian rhino too, when other zoos dont want to commit. on the other hand, taronga went to the trouble of importing a german-bred Asiatic Golden Cat in 2006 and now the species is being phased out of the region!
so in some cases Taronga is leading the way in cooperative management of species and in other areas failing. i sincerely hope both the pygmy hippo breed, and that in the near future more Brazillian Tapir are obtained from overseas. im always wary the could be the next group of animals quarantine bans from being imported!

btw has anyone noticed some 'quirky' features of wild asia? to me, its the window for the tapirs to look out of their exhibit onto the visitor path. the window cant possibly be for people to use, i can only guess its for stimulation for the animals....

Where is this information coming from. Somehow I missed the idea that Golden Cats were being phased out. Thanks for the info about the languers Pat. Boof were you perhaps refering to the gay thread becoming a rather personal slanging match between a couple of people?
And why has Adelaiode pulled out? Because of the diffulcity of obtaining animals?

Yep. but it seems to be the same people all the time. Maybe we need a sin bin for posting rubbish.
