ThanksThe hippos were a disappointing loss, so at least we got to keep one. Does anyone know of the hippo numbers now in Australia? 1.1 at Adelaide, 1.4 Werribee, and now is it 2.4 at TWPZ? Is this right?
As far as i know population stands at:
ADELAIDE ZOO - 2 (1.1.0)
1.0 - Albert / Brutus
0.1 - Suzy / Victoria
WERRIBEE - 5 (1.4.0)
1.0 - Harry / Harold
0.1 - Primrose
0.1 - Brindabella
0.1 - Tulip
0.1 - Lotus
DUBBO - 5 (2.3.0)
1.0 - Happy
1.0 - Mana
0.1 - Susie
0.1 - Nile
0.1 - Cuddles
Do you know the ages of the hippos at Dubbo?
1.0 Happy b.1985
1.0 Mana b.1996
0.1 Susie b.1970
0.1 Nile b.1999
0.1 Cuddles b.2002
Thank you. One last question, where were they all born?
Suise was born at Taronga, Mana, Nile and Happy all born in Dubbo and Cuddles in Cairns
Kibali, Mbeli and Johari (western lowland gorillas) have moved into the main exhibit, which has been slightly refurbished: Taronga?s new gorilla family moves in | Taronga Conservation Society Australia
So are there just these three gorillas at Taronga now? I haven't managed to follow all the moves that have taken place recently. Is there anything in the second enclosure? How was the main enclosure refurbished?
There is now two groups at Taronga:
1. (1.2) Kibali (m), Mbeli (f) and Johari (f)----all unrelated animals [MAIN EXHIBIT]
2. (2.1) Fataki (m), Fuzu (m) and Frala (f)------mother and two sons [OFF DISPLAY]
Supposedly (I still don't know if this is true), Frala was meant to be integrated with the main troop, but I am not sure now. Fataki and Fuzu are I still believe to be planned to move to Orana.
The second enclosure now has nothing. It has held gorilla (Kibali + females as well as two bachelors before they were moved to Japan), De brazza's guenon and ringtailed lemur. The main enclosure has had slight climbing structure modifications (making them shorter) as well as new grass planting after 17 years of at least 8 gorillas in it, which made it all dirty/muddy. From when I last went the moat has also been drained and hotwired added into the moat, so gorillas are now actually separated by hotwire rather than water (but I am not sure if they kept this, probably tho).
Hope that answers your questions![]()
