Taronga Zoo Taronga Zoo News 2013

Thanks :) The hippos were a disappointing loss, so at least we got to keep one. Does anyone know of the hippo numbers now in Australia? 1.1 at Adelaide, 1.4 Werribee, and now is it 2.4 at TWPZ? Is this right?

Pygmy Hippo in Wild Asia?
Why? It can't be a permanent move can it?

Yes it is. Both Kambiri (b. Taronga, 2010) and the new male from Cairns (who is at Taronga) will move there AFAIK. I think they are going to split both parts of the old Malayan Tapir exhibit to make two exhibits (one next to the Francois langurs and binturongs and the other next to the otters).

And 'Wild Asia' is now 'Rainforest Trail'.

Thanks for that.

That's right, I now remember the new map with the new 'themed' areas.

Oh well...

What happened to the Malayan tapirs?
just the one at Taronga I think. He moved to another enclosure (the former pigmy hippo enclosure, funnily enough). Taronga likes playing musical chairs with their animals :D

-Fergus the pygmy hippo from Cairns Wildlife Safari is now in the old Malayan tapir exhibit, across from the francois langurs and next to the binturongs. There is a moving crate in Kambiri's exhibit.
-Fennec foxes born last year are now on display between the sumatran tigers and lions
-Fennec fox kits have been born again
-Lemur Forest Adventure nearly completely finished, if not finished but only needing pathway and landscaping work.

With the recent death of the log beaked echidna at Moscow Zoo, does that mean that Taronga is currently the only zoo in the world to exhibit (Eastern) long beaked echidnas?

yes, the only captive long-beaked echidnas of any species are the ones at Taronga.
