Taronga Zoo Taronga Zoo News 2024

I know international visitors would be captivated by seeing Saltwater crocodiles. They’re hugely popular at Australia Zoo and as a fan of the Crocodile Hunter series as a kid, I was still interested to see multiple exhibits of them to see all the individuals from the show.

Unfortunately they require a lot of space and so as a city zoo, I agree Taronga will likely never hold them again.

Space wasn't the issue for taronga the heating of the enclosure and water were. Featherdale, and the reptile park hold large males in enclosures that are not actually that big. However, Sydney's climate is not one for them and they require a lot of specialized heating which the zoo decided not to do. I remember when they made the big deal about how sydney isn't ideal to keep them and best decision is to phase them out. Which made the zoo look less then stellar, when featherdale, the reptile park, symbio and wildlife zoo at darling harbour all held the species. That was a PR nightmare for them.

Of memory isnt part of the wild ropes over where they used to be.

No, Rin Tin was at the bottom of the zoo beside the current island inhabited by the Cotton Top Tamarins, and of which used to house Mary the Mueller's Gibbon. His former enclosure still is there I believe, sitting empty.

The old Saltwater crocodile exhibit was still there when myself and @steveroberts visited last month:

Taronga/Dubbo - Highlights of 2024

It’s been an eventful year for Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo, but without a doubt the highlight has to be the birth of Pygmy hippopotamus Lololi at Taronga Zoo; and the announcement of Asian elephant Anjalee’s pregnancy at Taronga Western Plains Zoo (calf due December 2025 approx).

Video of highlights here:
