the best zoo in Germany?

Which zoos in germany you will see in october ?

Not sure. I'm trying to let you all help me decide. But since I'll already be in the Netherlands (seeing zoos), I'll likely go to German zoos that are somewhat close to the Dutch border. I'm thinking of the Duisburg/Bonn area. From what I'm reading (here and elsewhere), I could see a bunch of good German zoos in that area, without traveling very far between them. I also badly want to see Frankfurt. Any suggestions?

Wow, thanks, Eduardo!

So German friends (and anyone else you might know): Suppose I'm in that western Germany area -- in the Koln-Muster-Dusseldorf area (is there a name for this highly populated region?). Suppose I'm choosing from the following zoos:

Munster, Krefeld, Duisburg, Wuppertal, Dortmund, Koln

WHICH would you prioritize if you were visiting this area? Suppose I can only get to 3 or 4 of them -- which ones?

Don't forget Zoom as well.

I myself did a tour of the Cologne-Rhine area four weeks ago, seing Cologne Zoo, Duisburg Zoo, Wuppertal Zoo, Dortmund Zoo, Frankfurt Zoo, ZOOM and GaiaPark. All in all it is a very nice area for zoobetrotting :)

So Toddy, would you mind putting the above 7 zoos in order -- based on how strongly YOU believe they should they considered "world class" zoos?

Would you like to do a review on those zoo's for the members :)

@ANyhius:
I have been in this Ruhr-Area a year ago and regarding at my opinion, you should not miss out visiting of Koln, Wuppertal, Duisburg and Krefeld. But it depends on what are you interested for, this zoos have some unique animals in its collections, in Koln is kept the very last Saiga in any Zoos (with exception of any Russian institutions ), the last Red-howler monkeys and Doucs in Europe, Broad-nosed and Belted-ruffed lemurs etc. I like this zoo very much, of cource there are some outdated enclosures like in any zoos worldwide ( for bears for example) and it is a pitty they have built the huge elephant enclosure, the former look of a part of the zoo is beyond recovery ( there were exhibits for Indian wolves,Javan bantengs and Vicunas on the current elephant area), but all in all, quite a good zoo and still worth a visit.
Wuppertal is known for its unusual species like Bairds tapirs, Black-footed and Temmincks Cats, Indian leopards, White-lipped deers, Drills, Dusky leaf monkeys etc, Duisburg is a really good zoo, with Amazon river dolphin in a very nice exhibit, Giant otters, Wombats, King colobus and spectacular Dolphin show, Krefeld is an enjoyable zoo too, with Mountain anoas, Babirussas, Bat-eared foxes, Tamanduas etc, but in my point of view, any of this zoos
are not a world class, if would like to see a really world class zoos in Europe (regarding myself), you should visit Rotterdam, Arnhem,Emmen, Prague and Chester, I consider all of this zoos a bit better than the zoos in Ruhr area.
I hope, I did not aggravate any of the german Zoo-fans:)

Thanks, Jakub, that helps me a lot. I'm also planning of visiting the Dutch zoos on this trip, so your endorsement of BOTH Arnhem and Emmen is of much help.

@ANyhius:
You are welcome :), I am just reading your book America's Best Zoos, hope to visit United States sometimes, but at first I will have to break a bank :D

@Anyhuis. First thing : Forget "Zoom", don't go that place. It is not a zoo anymore, it is a themepark with animals, and not very good. Big parts of the park, the anme Zoom says anything, are full of cheap looking artificial rocks, altough they are just three years old, they have to be fixed for a lot of money. "Zoom"is not interested in conservation prpjects and, amazing, is using tropical wood from africa in its restaurant......The collection is simple, mostly species wihich are favourites to the public and which brings money. belive me, w ehave much better, real zoos in germany, so your choice is very good. If youc an't visit them all, I suggest you to visit Duisburg,Wuppertal and Dortmund, it depends on, what you would like to see, so the primate collection at cologne zoo is excellent. The zoo als have a great okapie xhibit, the last saiga in an european zoo, douc langurs, red howler monkeys....They do have one of the biggets elephante xhibit in germany, but the exhibit isn't really good for them. The yhave to many elephants in it, so its not really the biggest exhibit. They have a calf, born a few days ago. The zoo also ha a tropical rainforest building and an odler aquarium ,which is very nice. Cologne Zoo is not bad, but it was much better few years ago.

Duisburg Zoo is now much better than cologne, teh colelction is smaller, but excellent, so you can see koalas, wombats, fossas, the last river dolphin, giant river otters, giant anteaters, kodiak bears, dolphins and a good primate collection.

Wuppertal zoo is a great landscape zoo with a famous collection, with okapi, red river hog, bairds tapirs, drills, and more rare primate species, yellow backed duikers, a good collection of small cats, golden ctas, mishmi takin, white lipped deer, pudu shoebill storks. Very good bird collection and a small aquarium.

Dortmund Zoo has a great collection of south amercian species, tamanduas, three species of armadillos, tamanduas, an amazon building, a new house for malayan tapirs and orang-utans, an otter house with giant river otter and asian small clawed otters,a collection of diffrent south american small cats, indo chinese tigers, angolan giraffes, gaur, red forest duikers....Highly recommended.

If you will get the chance to see Frankfurt as well, do it ! The zoo is not really big and is located within the city, but is has an excellent collection, the biggest nocturnal house in europe ( Aye-Aye,Aardvark,kiwi ! ), a great new ape house, a phantastic birdhouse, an old, but really good aquarium with an excellent reptile department, okapis, babirusa, a good exhibit for seals and south african furseals...And not to forget the cat-jungle for asictic lions, sumatran tigers, rusty spotted cats and fossas.

If you have any questions, ask ! Krefeld is also one of the best german zoos.

It is interesting to compare the Stern survey from 2000 and 2008.
Some of the zoos are cca at the same position: Hamburg, Munchen, Krefeld, Augsburg, Duisburg
Some has fallen down: Cologne (from 1st to 15th!:confused:), Dortmund, Stuttgart
And some are on better positions: Berlin zoo (from 18 to 1st:D), Berlin Tierpark (from 15 to 2), Franfkurt, Wuppertal, Leipzig

I am not enough competent to say if there is real reason why some of the zoo has fallen deep and some jumped to the leading positions. Leipzig has improved much, Frankfurt has new Ape house (is this enough for better ranking?), on the other side not much changes in Stuttgart or Munchen.
But from the facts you write here, Duisburg has improved much and just a little better position in chart.
The big mysteries for me are Cologne and both Berlin zoos. Why Cologne has fallen so much (zebraduiker wrote something about not good collection as used to be...but this cant play a big role in a commercial chart). And Zoo and Tierpark? So much improvement to go from the bottom to the top??? They used to be so bad??? I have visited only Berlin zoo (first time 2004 or 2003) but I dont thing there were so big changes.

May be behind every strange change in this chart is human factor ... different reviewers. :)

Slight side track here, when Cologne built the elephant park, what enclosures and houses were demolished to create this huge exhibit?

i have never visited this area of Germany, but with so many quality zoos crammed into such a relatively small area, it really has to be any European zoo fanatic no.1 holiday spot.

And for what its worth, collection wise i would say Wuppertal, on paper looks the most impressive, exhibit wise i would plump for Cologne, and for an outstanding general collection Duisburg has some real rarities.

Is Dusseldorf aqua zoo near this area too, and is it worth a trip to see?

@cockroach. Forget the Stern testing, it is printed toilet paper, no less, no more.

@Kiang. To build the elephant exhibit at cologne zoo, they had to destroy a huge waterpond and exhibits for lamas, vicunias, banteng, indian wolves, scotish highalnd cattle, dromedaries and the old owl aviaries. So a lot, just for elephants...Altough many zoos in the area of cologne do have elephants also...But nowadays, all german zoos have to breed elephants now, because they can earn a lot of money with the calfs, this is the only reason why they are breeding elephants....

Düsseldorf Aqua-Zoo is evry close to cologne, it a combination of museum and aquarium, its very nice and of course worth to visit it, but don't expect a modern Super Aquarium.
