The savannah and grand canyon.

In sand color the savannah with: zebras, girafs, impalas, waterbuck, gnu, whithe rhino, ostrich.

You can enter the savannah by passing the grand canyon (the brown area top right), home for the baboons, and perhaps the barbary sheep.

At the water you can find the hippos. I think the dark gray square left of it is their inside enclosure.

Bottom left: the total surrounded area of the lions (with the pool).

Other species: kangaroo, dromedaris, meerkat, emu, hyena.

The total width of this picture is 410 meters, the height is 420 meters.

The Arctic world

Species: Siberian tigers, Patagonian mara, guanaco, rhea, reindeer, mountain hare, bison, elk, prairiedog, white-tailed eagle, common raven, polar bear.

The public can walk or go by train through this area.

The picture measures: width 330 meters, height 340 meters

Some animals can stay outdoors during the nights when it is not to cold.

Left: elephants
Right: the stables for the animals of the savannah with next to it the outside enclosures.
The buildings at the bottom are staff buildings and quarantine buildings, veternerians, etc.

Measures of this picture: width 275 meters, height 500 meters.

This is what I think a large aviarium with different kind of birds. The circle on the right is a tree from where the visitor will walk downwards to he bottom of the avarium.

The width of picture is 165 meters, the aviarium is circa 100 meters.

I don't really like the look of this new Emmen Zoo. Those are some weird themes...

I also can't wait to see pictures of the new exhibit for the elephants should look awesome and with a large herd I think it will give an awesome more so natural theme than the current one.

The World of Meeting, with a theater, restaurants, bars, shops, and the entrance to the zoo. The building is oval and is 170 meters long. Notice the grass on top with some animals!!

Well guanaco, mara and tigers as Arctic animals are a bit stange - a climate change world? :)

But size of exhibits looks great and I hope it will be as good as it looks.

BTW - already built guanaco paddock is rather small, although extremely well designed, with artifical skyline and araucaria trees.

What I cold 'arctic' is actually the 'World of Freezy Cold'. The new zoo has no separations of continents but more or less areas with a theme, called 'Worlds'. The elephants, and apes are living in the 'World of Moisty Warmth', and the savannah area is called the 'World of Dry Heat'.

Aaaaah, now the theming makes more sense:) I still prefer the geographical theming though and find it a shame that Emmen Zoo do not wish to keep that concept.

Well, geograpical theming was something new many years ago, and today almost every zoo has it. Emmen starts with a new concept, so maybe other zoos will copy it in the future :D

Hi UntBwe, thanks for all the diagrams. This will definatley be a amazing zoo. Emmen has always been a very progresive zoo. With great looking exhibits. that also serve the animals very well.

Thanks, I will update you all whenever there is some news, and will make photos as soon as they start building.

The fascinating part is that this new park will actually be zoo emmen 2.0. There's a new concept, and of course new exhibits and new species, but like the current zoo, there will be a large savannah, a large elephant enclosure, and the monkey's will be kept on islands ( with the exception of the baboons, who will inhabit a large canyon, and possibly the ringtail lemurs, who will possibly inhabit an walk-through exhibit), and most enclosures are fit for large herds, just like it is now. Only the herds will possibly be bigger.

Well, i have seen a 3D simulation of the new park today, and it looked good ( the park, the simulation was crap spoken in technical terms). They showed the part where the elphant and indian rhino enclosures should come, including the resting area. The interesting part was the rhino exhibit, where the rhino's will be combined with dholes. The elephant enclosure will be big, with a lot of water, but we already knew that. Spanning across the enclosures and the visitors area is a network of large stakes, ropes, and nets, where the orang utans can amuse themselves. This network will spann a distance equal to the distance visitors will have to walk across this part of the park, probably several hundred meters.

The old park will largely remain intact, the open area's will remain open, and new buildings will arise only at the places where there are allready buildings present. This new city area should become more than just sustainable ( but I have got no idea how they will accomplish that).

An elephant caregiver told me yesterday that the new elephant barn will be 3000 sq meters.

Do you know what the size is of the current barn? And I'm wondering if the new barn will be made more attractive towards visitors instead of the current barn which is more focussed on functionality.

The present barn is 17 x 35 meters. I don't think the new barn will be attractive to visitors. On the map you can see that it is a 'behind the scenes' building. Perhaps some kind of a gallery.
