The EU/Brexit vote and zoos

Someone early on stated that Scotland was largely in favor of remain. I wonder if this exit result could push them into another referendum on independence with the added incentive of rejoining the EU?

The irony is that this vote will almost certainly be the end of the United Kingdom as we know it, Scotland will have another referendum and the Union Jack all the Leave voters keep waving won't exist any more either!!

Another point regarding the close vote, Leave got less than 40% of those eligible to vote, in my book, not voting indicates you don't want change!

It won't just be the possible (probable?) end of the UK, other countries in the EU will now begin to call for their own referendums. This could be the end of the EU too.

Apart from zoos, what influence have we had on conservation and wildlife projects across europe? I was thinking along these lines earlier this morning, but then boris johnson's dad came on the radio voicing the same concerns; apparently he was sporting a Remain For Nature tshirt (guess I should check out their site)

So everybody that voted out is an idiot ,what total crap
People that dont even live in the uk voicing there unwanted opinions ,what on earth has it got to do with you
The uk has got back its independence not ruled by some bigwigs in brussels
Maybe scotland should have there own referendum let them look as stupid as they did when they tried to get there own parliament ,i wonder how many illegal immigrants wanted to go to scotland probably not many but who would blame them
Is it a good thing to start slagging people off for there views just because they are not yours is wrong ,maybe your the idiot for voting to stay in

The end for the EU is near and yes I voted Leave mainly because of all the lies coming out of Mr Cameron's Mouth and for the better of the country.

I'm not and Idiot or ***** as stated on here by other people the British people had their say get over it.

The vote is so close I don't see how we can leave when 48% of the country want to stay in the EU....if the vote had been a bigger majority, there would be less of an outcry. Well not from me as it is stupid to do this.

it's quite simple Taun. We can leave precisely because 48% of the voters want to remain, look at it the other way 52% want to leave. It is a clear majority. Remain lost. They need to get over it.

Nice first post! Welcome to the forum.

I don't think you and I would ever be friends, judging by the attitudes, implicit and explicit, expressed here. I've never been much of a fan of racism, bigotry and small mindedness. I don't really have the energy to rebut your views, and I'm not sure there's a great deal of point - you think your way, I think my way, and we're unlikely to change - but one day into Project Leave, things are already looking rather shaky, economically, to say nothing of the social implications. A large number of jobs are a great deal less secure than was previously the case, billions have already been wiped off the value of the pensions of those who worked long and hard to secure a future for themselves, the pound has plunged. And so, yes, I do think that anybody who thought this would be a good course of an action is a complete idiot.

Big and drastic changes are suposed to happen not just in Britain or Europe, but in the whole world, in tne next 5-15 years, because of shifting from Piscesian age to Aquarian age. The last 2000 years were in Piscesian age, a traditional age, religious, hierarhical age, but we should be scared of Aquarian age - extreme, revolutionary and tehnical, with the moto ''I know'', at least this is from Astrological point of view (I am also member of Astrology group on fb, so many things are said there). Mankind started in Leo age (opposite sign of Aquarius), Antient Greece and Roman empire were in the age of Aries.

Anyway, since the original poster wanted to avoid politics (to the extent possible), I suggest we return to civility. The impact on zoos will be long-term; why get this thread shut down in the short?

Likewise to whatever tangent Nikola's off on.

I wouldn't be so bothered if they didn't keep waving the Union Jack, the UK is no more, wave the flag of St George or the Welsh dragon, or the proposed green union jack maybe, Scotland has gone!!

I disagree! The impact on our economy could have an effect either negative ( recession) or positive (less people can afford their holiday to Spain /Greece etc) on the survival of our zoos!

Maybe a weak pound will mean everyone will flock to London to see land of the lions!! I doubt it!!

Just for info, Scotland has had its own Parliament since 1999...

I agree! However, the above mud-slinging wasn't making those points, and no-one knows what will happen next. I don't see anything wrong with speculating here, but let's not nastily rehash old arguments in a referendum we've already lost (or won).

Fair enough, I think I misread your last post slightly anyway!

This is actually a valid point. I am currently reading the fantastic centennial books on the history of San Diego Zoo. During WWII when many zoos (and the economy as a whole) suffered, San Diego Zoo actually thrived. In this case it was due to military servicemen being camped in Balboa Park and going to zoo for relief. But if the UK economy does indeed suffer (which it may or may not), it could encourage locals to holiday at home and there could be a surge in local zoo attendance.
