Marwell Wildlife The Future

in a copy of the masterplan that i have seen there are not too many new species being brought into the collection amongst new species mentioned include, the aforementioned gorilla, Nile lechwe, gelada, hamadryas baboon, shoebill, hippo (with a question mark next to it), Fishchers and violet touraco, trumpeter hornbill, wattled crane, De Brazza monkey (guenon sp), white crowned mangabeys, Himalayan pheasants as well as scarlet ibis but they are mentioned in the Madagascar zone, so i think they meant sacred ibis.

just one edit - i have been emailed by bill hall and told that lions are no longer on the list!

and i dont like the sound of british woodlands

Well it's been one of the most put forward plans in the zoo's future and a sign by the planned site can be seen, so it's pretty certain.

I actually like the sound of having a British woodland biome. I was at Monkey World recently and they have a very good woodland walk, with a lot of native birds feeding on bird feeders. I think it is good that Marwell are not just interested in bringing in a lot of exotic species, but doing their bit to promote conservation at home aswell.

Exactly. For so many years now they have run breeding programmes for Sand Lizards and Natterjack Toads(this particular programme is now complete), but Marwell never really publicised this enough, and they were off exhbit (But I knew where to find them anyhow). By creating a biome dedicated to in-situ wildlife, people can actually realise that Marwell isn't just a typical zoo exhbiting foreign animals. :)

i avctually thought it was quite "typical" for zoos to feature woodland walks, nothing really extraordinary

just a quick one dalek - do you mean the amusment area near the entrance?

Yup. ;)

Got the most recent biome map via email today. This one just shades the biomes and adds details of various amenities, no notification of animals. Apparentley, on-site visitor accomodation will be located near the hall, and a wildlife hide is present, I think for evening badger watches.

Hi,

This is my first post here.

I went to Marwell yesterday and there was a lot of building work going on. I tried searching to see if I could find out what was happening and stumbled across this site.

There were signs up that animals were temporarily in different paddocks and there were several in different enclosures to what the guide book said. Several enclosures were also empty pending work.

If anyone is interested the areas they were working on were.

- The Heart of Africa exhibit and bongo paddock were not accessable to the public as there was work going on.
- There was a lot of work going on around the new restuarant and the adjacent przewalski's horse and camel paddock.
- The somali wild ass enclosure next to the waterbuck was in the middle of being taken apart.
- The serval enclosure next to the rhinos was empty and closed off.
- The red panda enclosure next to the snow leopards was empty and the little shelters for the pandas had been boarded up.
- The anteater enclosure was in the middle of being dismantled. The fences were gone but the shelter was still there.
- Although there was no sign saying so, the pudu enclosure appeared to be empty and the shelters had been completely cleared out.
- The nocturnal house was shut.

dalek - il message you my email adress so you can send it if thats okay?

NMM - welcome,

1. heart of africa is probably closed due to the new valley paddock
2. same goes to the restaurant area
3. somali wild ass paddock - dalek is that where the gorillas are meant to be going?
4. serval enclosure has been empty for a while
5. same goes to the red panda enclosure
6. they are putting the new frog centre at the old anteater encolsure (is it still not built :()
7. pudu have been gone for a while
8. nocturnal house was only temporary for londons zoo animals while the clore was refurbished if im right?

The gorilla exhibit would be in that area, yes. I don't think it kept any of the temporary clor animals in night life, as the enclosures are small and any animals that could've used them would more likely be housed somewhere easilly at London. And Night Life also contains Basil the Brush-Tail Possum who was a rejected pet.

I'm going to Marwell for my Oryx Club meeting this Sunday, so I'll be able to provide more updates then.

im pretty sure i remeber reading in the newsletter that they were housing some noctural creatures for london!

Thanks for the replies.

Everything in this thread seemed to be consistent with what I saw.

I found it interesting that a number of the enclosures either empty or being redeveloped were where they had two for the same species in different parts of the park, e.g. wild ass, red panda and servel. I thought at the time that maybe they are cutting back on muliple sites per animal so they can increase the number of species on display.

I was suprised by which red panda exhibit had been shut. The last time I went to Marwell was 3 years ago when the Roof of the World (Himalayan animals) was the new thing. By keeping the red panda site by the waterbuck instead of this one it breaks the Roof of the World concept. Unless there are plans to add another Himalayan species and they need the space. Does anyone know anything?

being a more quieter season for zoo visitors i asume the zoo has started making several changes for next year - maybe some new animals coming in?

and i have no idea what is happening with the red pandas

I think the red panda inhabiting the Roof of the World enclosure died recentley, and they appeared to have taken time after it's death to add new shelters to the pen, as their previous 'tree-wrap den' concept attracted too many mice & rats. I presume they'd move the North Section pandas there or gain animals from another collection.

We are just back from 3 lovely days at Marwell zoo and the hotel, fantastic time :D

Is there any otters in the new otter enclosure by the gibbons we must have visited it about 6 times and never saw any only the ones in the enclosure opposite ?
