The Nonsense Thread

I already know that it'll be hard, but it's my passion in life. Don't mean to sound corny and all. But, I think my willingness to move out of the state and/or country will help me land a job somewhere. I actually really wouldn't mind moving to Australia, Thailand, South Africa or India to work there. I just need to figure out what organizations do so I can specialize more.

Whether you leave the country or not a readiness to pack all your things and move is always a quality needed to be in the zoo business. Of course once you land a job that comes out more if you get a higher position.

It wouldn't be just for a zoo career, if I was able to land a job at a zoo, I'd prefer to work in the US/Australia/South Africa. And then Australia/South Africa/Thailand/India to become a wildlife biologist. My uncle, who lives in India, told me that since I am Indian, I'd have a much higher chance of getting a wildlife biologist job in India since I can 'fit in' more and such. I'd love to be able to work as a herpetologist studying snakes or extracting their venom, since snake bites are really common in some areas of India. But, then again, I'd love to be able to work with really any animal.

If your from India or anywhere else I don't think it would make a difference down here so long as you have the skills & a can do attitude.

Like everywhere else now there is fewer research dollars about, however we harvest millions of kangaroos each year, camels in hundreds of thousands, buff in tens of thousands, pigs & goats in millions & our introduced deer are a recognised game species in some states. All these activities can turn a doillar & require good monitoring & adaptive management because of our unpredictable weather. There is careers money & opportunity in this section of wildlife management & it will increase. A good wildlife biologist with an understanding of game management & sustainable use could do well.

Oh, I meant that only if I was going to India for a job haha. My apologies.

I wouldn't mind doing that, however herpetology or conservation biology seems more interesting to me. I know there isn't room to be picky at all, but isn't there a big anti-venom industry in Australia? I could be wrong, but wouldn't that mean they need more researchers for that? If that's false, then disregard it, my bad aha.

Anti-venom is so last century. I believe that we already have anti-venom for the snakes that most often bite.

The next frontier, in my opinion, is using the venom for new drugs. Have a read of this article: Venom: The Bite That Heals - Pictures, More From National Geographic Magazine

Thanks for the article, it was pretty interesting! However, I think in places such as India, where anti-venom is hard to come by or non-existent it'll be a good market to start up. Altho, I'd also like to try to start a snake conservation area, but that's a whole different idea.

What exactly would you need as a major to use/study venom and how it can be beneficial?

Sorry for double posting and all, but if I do want to work at a zoo when I graduate, and I don't get the position I want, would it be possible to 'move up' over the years? I'd love to be a researcher and all. Since it was stated good zoo jobs are hard to come by.

I think it depends on your degree and such but I think you can get promoted just like in any job.

That would be nice if you could. Not saying that a zoo keeper is a bad job, but it'd be better if you could earn a bit more.
Are there any jobs for those who hold Masters or Ph.D's in the zoo they could just apply to without going through the ranks?

Of course if you have the right requirements you could just go and apply for a higher position.

And don't take everything I say on this subject like it's written in stone as I'm just a sophmore in high school and am also new to this.

Hmm, I'll try talking to a zookeeper at my local zoo that I volunteer at and see what they say too haha.

You are? I didn't think you were that young! Haha

Well, it's official. J.J. Abrams will begin filming Star Wars VII in London in 2014. I suspect that this movie will be more lens flare than anything else.

AR-15? Bushmaster is a brand.

Ah ok. I thought it meant Alabama Rifle club or something.

Yes, a bushmaster is indeed a neotropical snake. I recall seeing a few being killed when I lived in the Caribbean. They are venomous and are killed on sight as are all other snake species.

@tschlander, can you please keep your stupid gun comments off of this site! This is an animal enthusiast site and most of us are mostly anti-gun so please don't continue posted comments about rifles and hunting because none of us want to hear it! Thank you!
