The Only Ones In Britain

In 2002 I saw Chousingha at both Paris zoos (Vincennes and Jardin des Plantes) and I seem to remember (West) Berlin have also had them in the recent past so that's at least five.

Apologies for the self-quote but just wanted to add that in addition to the five mentioned, zootierliste.de also lists London, Basel, Rotterdam, Hannover and the old (pre-75) Bremen Tierpark as former holders of Chousingha. All the collections (including both Paris-es) are listed as former holders of the species, so unless anyone knows better, it appears the species is now absent in Europe.

I saw a single female about a year ago in Paris and believe it was the last of its kind in europe at that time, there is a good possability that it has died since!

At Belfast I believe we have the only Goodfellow's Tree kangaroo in the UK!

only 3 collections have kept Chousingha outside india, Howletts, Port lympne and paris (the latter still have them) The ones at the aspinall parks died out because of lack of introduced blood, and the fact that John Aspinall didn't like to share exclusive species

Also while i was a keeper in the mid 80,s at Howletts a zoo in Italy kept Chousingha not sure but Naples comes to mind

The last female Chousingha passed away in 2006 in Berlin Zoo, I was very lucky to see her in 2005, she has shared an enclosure with Nilgai antelopes next to the Elephant-gate entrance and the last of its kind in Europe died this year in Jardin des Plantes.

Ah! In with the Nilgai, of course! Thanks Jakub, I was sure I'd seen it there at my last visit (also in 2005) but couldn't place it until you said that.

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust Slimbridge is the only establishment to hold all 6 species of flamingo and they also have the UK's only group of Andean and James flamingos however this group is aging I think they have just one james left and around a dozen andeans!! Berlin zoo however has bred them rather well.

Indeed - for a start, a lot of the unique holdings mentioned in the first post are less unique now! It would be interesting to learn how many of those unique holdings are still so - off the top of my head I know the koalas at Edinburgh and the tuataras at Chester are still unique. And of course, Edinburgh will have another unique holding before too long..... ;)

Would i be right in thinking the white lipped peccaries at Dudley are now the only ones in the UK.

Belfast's spot necked otters, RSCC Malayan tiger and Paignton's West Caucasian tur

Correct; a damn nice species too.

On the topic of crocodilians, Crocodiles of the World has the only individuals in the UK of the following species:

Black caiman
Broad-snouted caiman
Siamese crocodile
