The Zoo Food Dilemma

When I used to visit zoo myself I just took sandwiches. Now I normally check before for a restaurant outside. Therefore I am not dependent from a zoo food.

Nevertheless, sometimes there is a pleasant surprise. I remember food in Tierpark Berlin and in Stuttgart was very good.

I don't have the notebook at hand where I recorded the precise distances I walked during my Czech trip in 2017 (including walking to and from the collections where appropriate) but I know I managed something like 35,000 steps during the day I visited Prague Zoo.
35,000 steps! Wow! My record is 28,000 at the San Diego zoo which is a huge zoo, so that makes me wonder just how big Prague zoo is.
Do you guys just wear pedometers everywhere? And then keep notebooks on how many steps you're taking?

Not everywhere, no - I only do it for my big zoo-visiting trips in order to get an idea of just how much I have walked over the course of the week, which comprises additional information for my notes relating to these trips. For instance, I walked more than 40 miles over the course of my week in the Czech Republic :p it probably says a fair bit about how high in calories Czech food can be that despite this, and the fact that there was a heatwave over the course of that week, I only lost two pounds!

Unfortunately my pedometer is quite cheap, and broke shortly before my recent trip to the Netherlands........

Basically. Well I don’t take notes but I have a Fitbit and it connects with my phone in a way that saves how many steps I take.

Well I hope you kept track in your head then!

I had much better things to think about :p like getting to the Rio Negro in time to see Baby when we popped over the border to Germany!

By the by (returning to the actual topic of this thread for a brief moment :p ) we rather enjoyed the food at the various collections we visited, although we didn't even attempt to eat at Duisburg so avoided the horrors already alluded to! Particular mention should go to the cakes in the cafe at Zoo Krefeld, and the food available within the Bush at Burger's Zoo.

I have a pedometer app on my iPhone, so I am always recording my steps everywhere I go, whether I want to or not!

I thought the food at Burgers’ Zoo was fabulous, although I didn’t eat at the restaurant in the Bush, I went to the one in the Park that overlooked the children’s playground. Position sizes were enormous, too!

What time of year was your Czech trip? I am pretty sure I won’t get to experience a heatwave in April, unfortunately!

I am going to have to watch that Czech food - I need to lose way more than just a couple of pounds off the back of all the walking I’ll be doing!

It was late June - I believe the low daily temperature for the week was something like 26 °C and the high was 33 °C.

It's a good job he's happy to have no milk as that can be a problem on the continent sometimes -many places have UHT cream for coffee but milk's sometimes not an option. I don't drink tea myself but my wife insists/confirms teas and cream doesn't really work (she's often left playing "Russian Roulette" with fruit teas instead).

Why is milk a problem? I bet it's only in those European countries which score low in the Corruption Index.

:D

I don't know, but experience has shown that many zoos/hotels/B & B's in Europe only provide cream, not milk, to go with hot beverages. I suspect there's more a tradition of tea without milk throughout (non UK) Europe though I've never really researched.

I’m a real foodie and my meal at the zoo is a huge part of the experience for me.

If that´s the case, be sure to prepare huge lunch box for your Czech trip, otherwise you could end up hungry and dissapointed :D (in some cases maybe even disgusted)

That sounds interesting! Is the offer not particularly good within the Czech zoos? Perhaps having to go hungry is not such a bad thing when I need to lose so much weight!

In this particular case, the tea in question was breakfast tea which I do prefer to drink with milk - however, the fact it was a bit weaker than I'd normally go for - as a result of the water not being hot enough to brew it properly - balanced matters out.

Things were a little better at the hotel we were staying at in Amsterdam though - the breakfast buffet was self-service and as such I was able to make sure my tea was the correct temperature and mostly drank Earl Grey which I universally drink without milk. When I felt like having something a little stronger, and which would require milk, I just got the milk from the supply provided for cereal :p

Your mileage may vary, but I found the food at Prague and Plzen very nice indeed!
