About 16 species in the single genus Nycteris.

Three species are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

Hairy Slit-faced Bat Nycteris hispida
Monotypic. Often divided into two subspecies (hispida and pallida) but there is no discernible difference between populations. The latter subspecies was described from Central Africa. The species N. aurita was formerly also treated as a subspecies of N. hispida.

Four subspecies are usually recognised (aethiopica, luteola, macrotis, oriana), but some authors consider there to be only two subspecies - macrotis in the rainforest zones and aethiopica in the savannah zones (this latter would then contain luteola and oriana).
