The Zoochat Photographic Guide to Rodents: part one

CUNICULIDAE
Pacas

Two species in a single genus: Cuniculus

Both species are represented in the Zoochat galleries.

Taxonomic note 1: the name Agoutidae has also been used for this family due to the generic name in former use being Agouti. The currently-accepted generic name Cuniculus has priority over Agouti (1762 versus 1799) but due to issues surrounding the original publication of the generic name it wasn't ruled valid by the ICZN until 1998, after which the use of Agouti was discontinued.

Taxonomic note 2: in 2010 a new species of mountain paca, Cuniculus hernandezi, was described from the Colombian Andes as a split from C. taczanowskii. The name has been argued as a nomen nudum, and I have left it off the list below as it doesn't seem to be accepted as a genuine species by most authorities.

Mountain Paca Cuniculus taczanowskii
Generally treated as monotypic, although "C. hernandezi" would suggest this to not be the case.

There is only one other photo on Zoochat labelled as being a Red Acouchi, by @vogelcommando at Tierpark Gettorf, Germany (Red acouchy | ZooChat), but Zootierliste has this collection as only holding Green Acouchis (former and current) so I will take this to be a mislabelling of the photo.

Confusing comes while Gettorf signed their animals as being Myprocta acouchy pratti and I used the English species-name without taking a look for the subspecies - which has as I understand now, species status under the name Green acouchi.

Ah, right. I have changed the title on your photo now.

PETROMURIDAE
Dassie Rat

One species, in the genus Petromus

Dassie Rat Petromus typicus
Fifteen subspecies: ausensis, barbiensis, cinnamomeus, coetzeei, cunealis, greeni, guinasensis, karasensis, kobosensis, majoriae, namaquensis, pallidior, tropicalis, typicus, windhoekensis

There are no photos of this species in the Zoochat galleries.

I've got photos of Dassie Rat from Tierpark Berlin; will dig them out, scan and upload when I get chance if I'm not beaten to it.

Turns out that people don't like photographing North American Porcupines apparently! The only one with photos is the ASDM.

Do you know if they have only ever had couesi, or is that just what they have currently? There is a photo by Giant Eland which I'd prefer to use but it is from 2010 (https://www.zoochat.com/community/media/arizona-sonora-desert-museum-2010.206449/); otherwise all the others are by Arizona Docent from a few years more recent, of which I would choose this one from 2014 (N American porcupine | ZooChat).

I think that's due to them being a pretty commonly seen species as well as usually being kept in enclosures that make photography difficult.

I just know that that's what they currently have, it came from Phoenix Fish & Game. ASDM gets the vast, vast majority of their mammals from Arizona rescue centers, though, so anything short of Ocelot and Bighorn Sheep (or any other SSP program animals I'm forgetting, not sure if there are others present) will more than likely be local subspecies.

As for agoutis, I've never seen any US zoos list St. Vincent Agoutis, but I have seen ssp. cayana. Beardsley Zoo's old animal was one, LA has at least one, and Stone Zoo has them (these are where I've seen them, not necessarily the entire listing). I'll dig into that more in a bit.

There are multiple mentions on Zoochat of St. Vincent Agoutis in American zoos, and it is easy to find reference to them on the wider internet also.

Family Ctenomyidae - tuco-tucos

About sixty-five species in a single genus, Ctenomys

A very poorly represented group of rodents on Zoochat. They are barely even mentioned in text posts, and only three species are depicted in the Zoochat galleries. They have very rarely been kept in zoos. Zootierliste has only three listings for European collections: C. magellanicus at Berlin Zoo (1914-1916), C. mendocinus at London Zoo (1915, and 1972-1974), and C. talarum at London Zoo (1967-1970).

ECHIMYIDAE
New World Spiny Rats

About ninety species in twenty-one genera: Callistomys, Carterodon, Clyomys, Dactylomys, Diplomys, Echimys, Euryzygomatomys, Hoplomys, Isothrix, Kannabateomys, Lonchothrix, Makalata, Mesomys, Olallamys, Pattonomys, Phyllomys, Proechimys, Santamartamys, Thrichomys, Trinomys, Toromys

This is a very large and complex family, with the extant species divided between three subfamilies (Dactylominae, Echimyinae, and Eumysopinae; a fourth subfamily from the Caribbean, Heteropsomyinae, is now entirely extinct and won't be discussed further). Some classifications would also place the Coypu (Myocastoridae) and hutias (Capromyidae) as subfamilies of Echimyidae.

Because of the taxonomic uncertanties in this family I have just followed the species and subspecies arrangement as listed by Wilson and Reeder's Mammal Species of the World (with some changes to genera and a few new species added in). Curiously almost all species are listed as monotypic, although I'm not sure if this is due to many species having restricted ranges or due to a lack of taxonomic research.

Disappointingly, only four species from three genera (Hoplomys, Isothrix, Proechimys) are represented in the Zoochat galleries. Because of this I will just put the photos all together at the start (below) and then have full species lists after.

CAPROMYIDAE
Hutias

About thirteen extant species in five genera: Capromys, Geocapromys, Mesocapromys, Mysateles, Plagiodonta. The first four genera have been combined as one (Capromys) at times.

Only two species are pictured in the Zoochat galleries, the Desmarest's Hutia (Capromys pilorides) and the Hispaniolan Hutia (Plagiodontia aedium).

Here's a photo by @LaughingDove of two Desmarest's Hutias (Capromys pilorides) at Prague Zoo, Czech Republic, playing patty-cake:

This family is endemic to the Caribbean islands. About a quarter of the known species have become extinct since the arrival on the islands of humans, and most of the remainder are endangered. Below I will list all the genera and species (including those which are extinct) by subfamily. In the following posts I will cover only the living species.

Subfamily Capromyinae

*Southern Hutia Mysateles meridionalis (probably a subspecies of Mysateles prehensilis)
*Prehensile-tailed Hutia Mysateles prehensilis

Subfamily Hexolobodontinae
One extinct species
*Imposter Hutia Hexolobodon phenax (extinct)

Subfamily Isolobodontinae

Capromys
One species

Desmarest's or Cuban Hutia Capromys pilorides
Four subspecies: doceleguas, gundlachianus, pilorides, relictus. A fifth subspecies, ciprianoi, is a synonym of relictus. The subspecies gundlachianus has been treated as a full species.

I can't find anything on which subspecies is kept in zoos but it is likely to be the nominate pilorides from the Cuban mainland (the other subspecies are all from offshore islands). The species is extremely variable in colouration, so I have included several photos below.
