Things people do that irritate you when you go to the zoo? #2

The following misconceptions I have heard
Emu is a big duck
Lemurs are monkeys
Bears are a type of dog
Birds are mammals
Turtles are scary
Snakes bite

The emu, birds, and bear ones are just ridiculous. The turtle one I can understand, in Vietnam there is a saying that goes "If a turtle bites you, the sky is grim and it will not let go", I know this is not true, but is just a traditional saying enough to scare people. Snakes do bite, but only when provoked or necessary, so I can also understand that.

Ok so how many threads have been split recently so I know which ones I have to re-subscribe, too...

I know that the Zoo Decisions threads was split, but other than that I don't think any others, maybe some of the ZooChat Challenge threads, but I don't think any others.

This thread was.. Also the Big Year and at least some news threads that I've seen thus far.

I was wondering this also. Seems to be more confusing than it does help. (I know the Design-A-Zoo thread was split).

The other day I was at my home zoo and I saw two people playing catch with a rubber ball. IN THE ZOO. Eventually one of the people threw it too hard and it ended up in the Emu exhibit. The older of the two people looked like he was considering jumping the fence to get it, but he didn't in the end. Not sure what happened to the ball. Wouldn't be surprised if the Emus ate it.

Freakin idiots.

I get why some people, especially young children, think that all penguins like cold weather. But older people saying that about Humboldt, Magellanic and African penguins? That would be the dumbest thing I'd ever hear.

-:cool::cool:TheWalrus:cool::cool:
Many people would not know one species of penguin from another. Not dumb, just not well informed.

At Dublin Zoo I overheard a woman calling an Okapi, "Half horse, half giraffe, half zebra". Also during that visit it was snowing and I seen quite a few snowballs being thrown at animals.

One animal can't be 1 1/2 animals
Never heard of the ManBearPig? ;)

People who feel the need to guess what animal is in the enclosure and tell others the completely wrong animal. I’ve heard an anteater described as a skunk and badger and a red panda described as being the same as ‘Rocky Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy.’

I get extremely annoyed when I am at an exhibit for Gibbons or for Chimpanzees and I suddenly here someone shout, “LOOK AT ALL THOSE MONKEYS!” I don’t care as much with young children, but when there is an adult there that doesn’t correct them or agrees with them, that irks me a little.

In my very short experience working in Fort Wayne over the summer, keepers mostly find it funny when people misidentify animals. At least once a week I heard some kid say, "Mommy, look at the baby cheetah!" when looking at the serval, but they're really not harming anyone. Kid's don't know. What really frustrates me and other keepers, is guests trying to feed or pet animals that don't explicitly have a sign saying that you can (many exhibits where the guests are closer to the animals there are signs explicitly asking them not to). Don't!! Feed!!! Or pet!!! Zoo animals!! Or go past barriers of any kind! (Also when people call our animals ugly, that's pretty annoying, too haha) I know I'm probably preaching to the choir, but we've had some incidents lately and it gets frustrating lol
