Things people do that irritate you when you go to the zoo? #2

Like everyone on this site, I hate it when I get on a safari bus or another vehicle and there's always some obnoxious six-year old who is screaming his ass off.

Another major pet peeve is my mother. She's one of those "clueless soccer moms" who buys into PETA's horseshit and spent much of my trip to African Lion Safari grumbling about how "sad" the animals are and how "natural" the exhibits are and how they "belong" in the wild. I pretty much dislike those kinds of people in general, the Petard who spends the whole trip whining about how zoos are so croool and eeevil.

Recently at the Prague Zoo, which I generally found excellent and the visitors seemed to generally behave, there was this one moment where I kinda snapped.
I was in the nocturnal section of the Indonesian rainforest, with the free-roaming fruit bats, and there was this young couple in there.
And then the guy pinched his girlfriend or something, and she screamed her lungs out at a deafening volume!! If it hurt me, just imagine the bats and bettongs she was in front of.
I just swiveled around, glared at them, and angrily whispered: "For Christ's sake, think of the animals!!"
I don't know if they understood the words, but I hope the tone made them reflect...

Fruit bats are loud themselves, one time I heard some screaming, I was thinking it was some kid but it was a trio of bats arguing over some fruit.
Yeah, I know, but I'm pretty sure that, like most non-primates, they have very delicate hearing and can do without a stupid human shrieking in the same enclosed area.
The bettongs probably hate it too.

Just wondering, if they have delicate hearing and are sensitive to loud noises, why do scream so loud themselves? You know what I mean?

Hmm, to a point. They probably use different frequencies too, and just because they make loud noises doesn't necessarily mean they like them. Us humans can scream, but generally we dislike hearing others scream.
I mean, who knows. I, myself, try to keep as quiet as possible around animals. I'm sure that they have tolerance (or god knows, they'd all be extinct by now), but still I find it very rude of people to scream at animals, particularly small mammals in an enclosed space...
