Taronga Zoo Thong Dee Is Pregnant

I'm sure some zoos would keep a batchelor group. If they were that serious about getting elephants and they were offered an all male group then I'm sure they would take it. It's like keeping a batchelor group of gorillas.

From a business point of view, a bachealor group is not a good finacial one.
Have you counted how many bachealor groups there are? Not many

But this pregnancy is from natural mating, which brings the calf sex liklehood back to 50/50 I guess. I'm sure either sex will be welcomed at this early stage in their programme- a happy outcome being more important to them no doubt.

Oh l missed that good for them. thx

I'm sure more will appear what with breeding only really taking off in the last 10/20 years. They wouldn't have much choice really. Can see what you mean with pricing of higher security housing and that.

yeah, at oregon, they assumed a male calf because of the level of testotrone in the mother's body.

I don't see how it would be any less financially viable than a herd of cows. of course the food bill would be a little higher but elephants are elephants. I think the size compared to the girls would attract visitors, and the tusks (if tuskers are born). I think it would be an impressive sight.

I could be wrong, i would say that a family group of elephants with young. Is going to attract in Australia. Perhaps 5 X as many visitors. This may chage in 20 years when we are use to it. Until then l really doubt it. Actually even in 20 years l think it would be 3 to 1.

Young is the key word there. but the popularity of Taronga and Melbourne's elephants has been simply because they are elephants not because they are a family group. ultimately babies will always be more popular. my point is it would not be a bad move financially to build facilites for bulls as elephants in themselves are an attraction and would generate higher attendance and further income for facilities that do not currently house these animals.

I agree with you there Jarkari, babies and big bull elephants ( with huge tuks) are the real crowd pullers.
