San Diego Zoo Thoughts on San Diego Zoo

Eh, I disagree, it's smaller than most rhino exhibits I've seen, and for an animal that large, some more space would be nice. Like I said, it will be interesting to see what they do with the old elephant enclosure.

It's narrow but not small which is why you can get close to the rhinos. Rhinos don't really require that much space, and the exhibit is quite long.

The Indian rhinos never bred at the SD zoo because they were cramped up in an exhibit that was to small for them, However after being moved to the open spaces of the SD WAP there was room to move and get out of each others way if they wanted to, something that they could not do at the zoo and now the rest is history

That is not exactly true! Rhinos and in particular the black rhino require adequate space to put between the individual rhino and the general public. Remember it is primarily a browser of wooded areas or complete impenetrable brush woodlands. They hardly encounter any other animals, let alone their own species and thus that clarifies their rather unpredictable nature and aggressive stance to anything foreign.

This kind of ecological niche needs to be replicated in captivity if the black rhinos are not to succumb to stress-related illnesses (e.g. the haemolytic anaemia condition in black rhino is brought on primarily by both dietary sub-optimality and stress related factors).

I would like to see a new and enlarged black rhino exhibit at San Diego Zoo for the michaelis. Further, I concur with several posters that are not happy with the moving away of SD and WAP from being open range zoos with loads of rare and fascinating hoofstock (equids, antelopes, deer) .... (most of these have had to be transferred out and some even sold off to private people at the expense of having a new elephant habitat).

Does anybody know the name of the San Diego Zoo bonobos or whether any transfers happen since 2006?

I know:
1,0 Yenge (*1982 at Frankfurt)
1,0 Junior (*1995 at San Diego)
1,0 Makasi (*2004 at San Diego WAP)
1,0 Tutapenda (*2007 at San Diego)
0,1 Lana (*1979 at San Diego)
0,1 Lolita (*1989 at San Diego)
0,1 Ikela (*1991 at San Diego WAP)
0,1 Nschumba (*2000 at San Diego)
0,1 Kesi (*2004 at San Diego)
0,1 Mali (*2007 at San Diego)

Thanks a lot... Bjoern

My sources tell me they are looking at southern whites for the zoo...

I much rather have the new elephant odyssey than all the antelope hoofstock.

I much rather have Blacks over Whites at the zoo, but currently at the zoo they have Indian which I rather have over Whites but not Blacks.

Exactly, one of the reasons why I am not too happy on the species front with San Diego Zoological Society these days ... I think they are going off their scope and focus here (southern whites for the zoo, with a full "breeding" herd at the WAP)???? Just as peculiar a choice as Frankfurt Zoo after Dr Schmidt left the place ...!!! ;)

Totally agree. They still have plenty of hoofstock, and will have some in the new exhibit. That section of the zoo was the least exciting other than the giraffe's imo, now it will be great, and will have much needed upgrades for lions, jaguars, and of course the elephants along with a few new additions.

From what I've seen of the plans, the new jaguar and lion exhibits will not be any larger than the outmoded cage and grotto currently housing those species. My guess is that the interesting concept underlying Elephant Odyssey will be lost in the usual poor detailing typifying nearly all of San Diego's recent new developments. The huge modern holding building, cable barriers and metal "enrichment trees" will not do much to evoke a comprehendable sense of the "California Pleistocene."

Reduakari I was told by a keeper at the San Diego Zoo that the new Jaguar exhibit will be much larger than the current one. I am sure Elephant Odyssey will be a great exhibit.

I say even if the jaguar exhibit is bigger, I believe the lion exhibit should be demolished for two reasons. One gives jaguars more space and second WAP has best lion in the country and probably still going to be way bigger than the one at SDZ

I have to say I do agree. Lion Camp is the best lion exhibit in the country, and that fact alone should give San Diego reason to not keep lions at the zoo. I am sure the space they are allotting for the jaguars will be large enough, however it would be better if they also had the lions space.

I'm sure the lion and jaguar exhibits will be larger and much better exhibits for the cats.

Like I said before, their exhibits are not perfect, but I think they're quite good, and I'm not going to make a mountain out of a mole hill like some seem to be doing on here regarding the details.

Why so sure? Look at the plans that have been published by the zoo, displayed on their construction signs and posted here! It's clear from the plans that the cat exhibits are NOT BIG, and in fact look about the same size as the current small exhibits for lions and jaguars. I agree that focusing just on jaguars might be a good move--it could effectively double the space devoted to them and the lions at the WAP are just fine.

And top quality zoos pay attention both to their mountains AND their molehills.

The "World Famous" San Diego Zoo would not stop displaying lions because their sister facility has a great exhibit. There are certain animals that people who travel from afar to see this well-known zoo expect to see. And far be it from the San Diego Zoo to disappoint them.

Why would they try and develop an exhibit to breed rhinos in the cramped quarters of the San Diego Zoo when they have the Wild Animal Park. Does it not make more sense to use the smaller spaces at the zoo to house some of the surplus males that are an inevitable byproduct of breeding programs?

Sdz can do what they want and not going to be angry at them . I understand why they would want to put more lions on display. But think of zoos in the U.S that display lions, compared to #of species of antelope, bats, marsupials, seals, and even cats that areniether rare or none at all and some who are going out be phased.

Reduakri I was told by the jaguar keeper, I think that is much more accurate than you judging from the plans. They will be much larger than the current exhibits. That would be pretty inaccurate to judge just by how wide the exhibit is compared to a service road. Why are you so doubtful Elephant Odyssey will not be a great exhibit? seriously.

I wasn't trying critize the exhibit I believe not every zoo needs lions and same goes with other species from gorillas to elephants. I thinkSan diego would be great from elephants but there are zoos should not be getting elephant no matter how great the zoo there be limit to some extant
