It's narrow but not small which is why you can get close to the rhinos. Rhinos don't really require that much space, and the exhibit is quite long.

I would like to see a new and enlarged black rhino exhibit at San Diego Zoo for the michaelis. Further, I concur with several posters that are not happy with the moving away of SD and WAP from being open range zoos with loads of rare and fascinating hoofstock (equids, antelopes, deer) .... (most of these have had to be transferred out and some even sold off to private people at the expense of having a new elephant habitat).![]()
My sources tell me they are looking at southern whites for the zoo...
I much rather have the new elephant odyssey than all the antelope hoofstock.
From what I've seen of the plans, the new jaguar and lion exhibits will not be any larger than the outmoded cage and grotto currently housing those species. My guess is that the interesting concept underlying Elephant Odyssey will be lost in the usual poor detailing typifying nearly all of San Diego's recent new developments. The huge modern holding building, cable barriers and metal "enrichment trees" will not do much to evoke a comprehendable sense of the "California Pleistocene."
I say even if the jaguar exhibit is bigger, I believe the lion exhibit should be demolished for two reasons. One gives jaguars more space and second WAP has best lion in the country and probably still going to be way bigger than the one at SDZ
Exactly, one of the reasons why I am not too happy on the species front with San Diego Zoological Society these days ... I think they are going off their scope and focus here (southern whites for the zoo, with a full "breeding" herd at the WAP)????Just as peculiar a choice as Frankfurt Zoo after Dr Schmidt left the place ...!!!
