Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin News 2024

According to FB page of Pairi Daiza, Javan leopard Pelangi will move to Tierpark on 28 May 2024.

It is the second of the 4 Tierpark-born male Javan leopard to return (with the other two males still staying in Belgium and France). Sadly, this is all there is left of this species in Europe. BUT Pairi Daiza also writes the transfer is part of an EEP agreement and that he WILL meet a female in Berlin. So I guess they get to import new Javan leopards (and most importantly get some females for breeding) sooner than expected.

I am so glad that Tierpark Berlin curatorial management has been sticking their neck out for another critically endangered island leopard taxon like the Jawan leopard. The species is highly vulnerable to continued decline on an densely overpopulated human population with all natural reserves and protected areas continually under pressures from human encroachment.

The current global Jawan leopard population ex situ is a bit diffuse. Quite a few zoos on Jawa in Indonesia do not list the subspecies for their leopards or maintain leopards of unknown provenance, mixed origins or generics and XXX leopards.

The registered population on the global database lists only 9 (3.6) individuals with 2 (2.0) in Europe and 7 (1.6) in Asia.

Well, apparently Pairi Daiza got quite a few things mixed up. Actually, they even assumed that a female Javan leopard named "Sinto" was already waiting for their male at the Berlin Zoo. And I was also informed that Pairi Daiza is generally pretty sloppy about such things (somewhat surprising and disappointing considering the animals and investment funds they move around). So we probably shouldn't make too much of their press release. It may be long or not so long, before some female(s) arrive at the Tierpark.

Sorry, if I raised any hopes on here. I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

That is quite disappointing from Prairi Daiza's side especially with an animal as rare as this.

I am trying for months to get in contact with coordinator of Javan leopards and hopefully find some information about their future in Europe and if I find something I'll write it here. ZIMS info are not correct more accurate is ZTL because I was in contact with each zoo from the list before I wrote that in the list.

Awesome news. I'm glad this finally got confirmed.

I don't undeestand much Italian, but it seems like Italo already arrived in Berlin or is to arrive here very soon.
The post says "Italo has arrived. The trip went well and his keeper is with him", I was focused on the video (which was probably taken prior to the move) and didn't read the description.

I just wish the Tierpark still had their monthly report on their arrivals/births/hatchings as well as departures/deaths.

The last weeks and months have been amazing, if not insane. If you just take the Brehm building:
Offspring for Sumatran Tigers, Binturongs and Bear Cuscus.
New arrivals for Javan Leopards, Asian Golden Cats, Bear Cuscus...

And now also Okapis.

By the way, there is also fresh offspring for Kulans 0,0,2 and Przwalski's Horse 0,0,1.

Even though, regular folks may not notice much of a difference, this could easily turn out to be some of the best years in recent Tierpark history in this regard.

I have to agree, some amazing new arrivals. Do we assume that the old snow leopard enclosure was remodelled for these additional golden cats?

If I remember correctly, the plans envisaged them on the left side of the main entrance, between the Java leopards and the leopard cats (the latter left the zoo around 2021).

Some brief updates:

After the Ferruginous Ducks the park also released one of their Przwalski's Horses (along with some from other parks) into the wild.

And they already had two new births of Przwalski's Horses this year.
They also mentioned plans to release some of the newly hatched ural owls.
And I'm sure they keep releasing European Bisons, Bearded Vultures, Northern Bald Ibis and European Hamsters as soon as they have enough offspring again.

Other than that the okapis are actually using their outside exhibit now:
