Berlin Tierpark Tierpark Berlin News 2024

They also posted some new information:
- They got a new female spectacled bear, making it 1,1. The bush dog family consists of 4 animals.
Both species are still learning how to interact or at least get along comfortable.
- Some improvements and new highlights are quite a few additional rocks, a tunnel, 5 large new climbing structures and of course the little stream of water. There also is a mix of rocky and grassy ground and a small cave which already has been added a few years ago.

And they added a short video:

What looks to be another well developed enclosure and a nice combination of species.

I can’t remember how big the current dhole enclosure and adjacent wolf enclosure are? Would it be larger enough to mix sloth bear from the zoo with them? Would make a nice exhibit and leave room for possible polar bear extension at zoo.

Did any species ever move into the old snow leopard exhibit?

They announced it is going to be used for Sumatran Tigers.

As to the wolf and dhole exhibits: Neither of them is small. But I don't even know, if they could actually merge them. I'm also not so sure, if they would get along. I heard dholes tend to gang up and attack even larger animals.

Münster keeps dholes and slothbears mixed, in a not too large exhibit. While Wuppertal keeps them with brown bears

Interesting. But do they also have large groups of dholes like the Tierpark does? I would really like the combination of dholes and sloth bears. But If possible, I would still prefer a nice exhibit for them in the Himalaya area. Either of the two species would round it off and I always hoped for one of them up there. A combination of both would still be better of course.

Edith: I mixed up sloth bear and Asian black Bear. So I would hope for these 2 species (dhole and Asian black bears) in the Himalaya part. Did these 2 also get mixed somewhere before?

I agree dhole and asiatic black bear and a separate enclosure for the yellow throated marten would be great up in the Himalayan area!

Same question I made for the zoo: are there any feedings that aren't signed on the website? I'll visit soon with a friend, and we'd be especially interested in carnivores (sun/spectacled bears, masked palm civets, dholes, hyenas, yellow-throated martens...) and in basically everything in the Alfred Brehm Haus.

An amazing first visit today with so many new and interesting species to enjoy at every corner. Unfortunately, a few of my target species didn't appear nor could I find a couple of species and I unfortunately couldn't meet up with the old Zoo Director but this didn't ruin my enjoyment. Highlights have to be the Alfred Brehm Haus as well as just the significant number of ungulates present at the collection. A truly fab day!

Well, an update is overdue. And there is quite a number of relevant news:

1) A male gerenuk died, so there are 3,3 gerenuks in Berlin now (1,3 in Berlin Tierpark and 2,0 in Berlin Zoo). This really isn't fun. I still remember how thrilled I was, when this species first arrived and each time there has been a birth. This enthusiasm has siginificantly suffered since then, though.

2) But there is also good news from the Africa zone: After the birth of a giraffe bull on June 24th, a little giraffe cow was born this last Sunday (August 11th). And apparently, they are still expecting a third birth. I think this will be a nice scene to watch.

3) It seems like they are preparing to put up the new roof on the elephant building. A couple of years ago I had the chance to speak with a (then) leading engineer or at least construction planner at the construction site who explained me how crucial this part is for the whole building process.

4) Some bad news again: A deceased Mitchell's lorikeet has been diagnosed with West Nile virus. The other 4 specimen also died and are presently being examined. So another blow against the bird section of the park (and they already seem less and less willing to put up with the various struggles like various predators or bird flue.

5) More births:
- There finally has been a birth at the Somali Wild Asses after some 8 years.
- There also have been 2 births at the Eastern Kiangs (the group has just received 0,2 specimen from Munich so the last remaining German herd is expanding).
- The black or Sulawesi crested macaques also have an offspring. After the little Sulawesi Babirusa it already is the second bith on the new exhibit. Unfortunately, one of the Asian small clawed otters died (possibly in a fight with the macaques?) but it already got replaced.
- The Rocky Mountains Goats have a little male.
- Three Thomson's Gazelles and an Addra Gazelle are being raised by staff behind the scenes

Wow, the many likes kind of surprised me. I actually had wondered, if I should add some videos for the news again and this strong feedback now convinced me to do it. As always, I only take official videos by the Tierpark itself and their official supporters "Freunde der Hauptstadtzoos".

Let's start with the giraffes. I think this gives a good idea what the herd looks like in their enclosure:
And if there actually will be third calf soon, this will be even better.

And if some of you should visit the park soon, it also could be worthwhile to enter the building and (quite likely) watch this scene:
(video from last month)
It's always an interesting experience for me to watch these fellows. Even the babies may not exactly be cute, but still I hardly know a more special and surprising mammal species.

Next, we have a look at some wild asses/donkeys and horses:

I thinks this has been quite an impressive year, when it comes to this group of ungulates (2 for each Przwalskis, Kiangs and Kulans and also 1 for the Somalis)! I always appreciated this large variety which can be seen and experienced in the Tierpark. The large groups are a thing to watch, especially when they are in (fast) motion and interacting. And with all the offspring it's even better.

Now just the zebras are still missing. They actually had their last one in late June of last year:

OT: I have to stop for now but I may add some more later on.

I also found one of the Sulawesi Crested Macaque:

And here we have some recent births which I actually didn't mention so far as they occur quite frequently at the Tierpark. But some but a few of them may actually still be interesting as apparently they aren't so common in some regions and countries (I checked Zootierliste and was quite surprised):

Eastern Wallaroo:

East African Banded Mongoose:

North American Porcupine:

Chacoan Peccary:
