Symbio Wildlife Park tigers

Just read in the Illawarra Mercury that Symbio plans to build a sumartran tiger exhibit. It is planned to open in August 2010 at this stage. It states that the tigers are one year old and are coming from New Zealand.

Sounds great...The more holders for Sumatran tigers we can get the better.

Why does that article state that the tigers are to take up temporary residence at the park? I thought they were planning on keeping and eventually breeding them both?

Thats a good question and I thought the same thing. Maybe they know that later on in the cubs' lives they will move on. Maybe the article was miswritten or maybe we are mistaken.

Maybe they plan to relocate one and keep the other once a suitable mate becomes avalible? I might email the and ask them to clarify what there doing with these tigers.

Or maybe its because all zoos are only really temporarily holding Sumatrans. Who knows where they will be and what tigers they will have in 12 months or five years. They will have very little say in what happens with their tigers in the future. that is up to the species co-ordinator.

I have just had an email back from Symbio and we can breath a sigh of relief! The tigers are there to stay. It was a typing error that nobody had picked up on. They plan to bring in a third individual sometime in the future and then look to relocate either Jalur or Cinta however this won't happen for a least a couple of years.

I have recieved word from a friend at the Auckland Zoo that there has been no confirmation to any other zoo that any of the cubs are leaving just yet. I am personally confused now.

Could be that the studbook co-ordinator has not passed on the message to Auckland that there cubs have been assigned. I have known it to happen before. Or it could simply be that they want the cubs departure to be as quiet as possible and are not releasing details of there destinations at this time. I believe Jalur and Cinta will leave sometime between June and August. Possibly July as this allows them to do a months quarentine before the exibit opens to the public.

Maybe. I very much doubt Auckland would keep the cubs' departure quiet tho as the zoo tends to allow people to say goodbye top much loved animals and often have leaving parties. It is possible Auckland Zoo hasnt heard yet but that would be a little bit odd wouldnt it seeing as Symbio is telling people.

I agree that all 3 cubs will be leaving around july just after they turn 2.

Both cubs will leave Auckland after June 2010. The plan is to keep both cubs at Symbio till at least early 2012. They will then look into relocating Cinta while a female is borught in for Jalur.

Our region is going very well with Sumatran tigers - there are now 44 (21 males and 23 females) at 13 different locations.

6 of these (3m. & 3f.) are at Australia zoo, and some of those are, I believe, unrelated to any others outside of Indonesia. Very valuable animals!.

Don't forget four cubs of as-yet-unknown sex at Melbourne. :)

So long as all three don't get subsumed into the Nico/Meta line

has anyone heard any news. there is nothing about a possible date for their public debut on there internet site. Have they left N.Z yet?

I contacted Auckland in July with regards to when Cinta and Jalur would be departing and the plan was that they would leave sometime before the end of this year although a date hadn't been set then
