Aquarium Bon Voyage

Aquarium Bon Voyage

Celebrate the history and future of the Toledo Zoo's Aquarium!

Join us at the Aquarium on August 11!

The Toledo Zoo’s Aquarium will close on October 1, 2012 for full renovation, scheduled to reopen in the first half of 2015. This Bon Voyage celebration is our way of sending off a beloved exhibit in style!

Activities

• 10am-4pm: Educational crafts and activities
• 10am-4pm: Check out historical photos of the Aquarium, along with conceptual images of the new Aquarium.
• 10:30am: Shark feed
• 11am-12pm: Behind-the-scenes Aquarium open house
• 1:15 pm: Tamarin primate enrichment in the Aquarium’s Rainforest room
• 2pm: South American Tank Dive/Feed
• 3-4pm: Behind-the-scenes Aquarium open house
What about the fish and the WPA-era Aquarium building?

Our Aquarium animals will remain in excellent care. They will be transferred to either an off-site facility for long-term care by the Zoo’s Aquarium staff, or they will be relocated to other aquariums in the region.

Opening in May, 1939, the Aquarium was one of the last Zoo projects built by Works Progress Administration (WPA) crews. Preserving this architectural heritage is an integral part of our renovations! The building’s “footprint” will remain essentially the same, while indoors you’ll enjoy floor-to-ceiling tanks, touch tanks and greater interaction than ever.

Don’t miss one of your last chances to experience the Aquarium and celebrate its legacy before renovations begin!

Toledo Zoo - Aquarium Bon Voyage

We went to the Toledo Zoos Aquarium Bon Voyage today.Among the festivities was a behind the scenes open house which we were a bit disapointed in, however the Q n A with the aquatics curator certainly made up for that.We also got to see some concept art for the new renovation plans which we'll post some pics of in the next couple of days.

AQUARIUM RENOVATION TIMELINE

Current Aquarium closes to the public 10-1-12. The zoo plans move 80% of its collection.A process that shall really start to gain steam after labor day.All three Ripleys facilities (South Carolina Tennessee and Toronto)are going to be acquiring the majority of the collection. The remaining 20% (mostly coral and endangered rare species)are going to be kept in a nearby warehouse. The zoo originally wanted to house the entire collection this way until they found out that it would cost 1.2 mil for 2.5 yrs to house a collection thats valued at 130,000.It would be more practical to start again from scratch.

11-17-12 Renovations begin.
6-6-14 African Penguin Outdoor exhibit opens.
April 2015 New Aquarium to open.
San Fransisco based EHDD (most notably known for Monterey Bay Aquarium)have been brought on board to design the new aquarium.Toledo was very impressed with their work on the Shedd Aquarium Rotunda renovation and felt they were the right group for this project.

CONTRASTING THE OLD AQUARIUM 2010 TO THE NEW 2015
OLD NEW
Number of exhibits 50 - 32
Gallons 46000 - 178000
Largest exhibit 7600 - 90000
Number of Species 287 - 200

I've read the written descriptions of what the aquarium renovations will entail, but does anyone know if there are blueprints/plans available to the public which will detail the layout? Just curious...

In June the zoo will open a temporary (summer only) walk-through exhibit with around 20 red-necked wallabies interacting with the public. There are also tentative plans to have dingoes and cassowaries added to the zoo to create an overall Australian theme.

Toledo Zoo reaches Down Under for exhibit to make debut in June - Toledo Blade

Another similar article on it, but this one confirms that Dingoes and Cassowaries will be included. It probably won't be too hard to source Dingoes with so many births this year for such a small US population.

Apparently the zoo hatched a kiwi chick in January. It is expected to be part of the Australian Walkabout exhibit this summer. The egg was acquired from Columbus in 2012.

Not sure if this is a chat (more or less) or a news forum... anyways, quick into to me, I live in toledo and I am a zooteen at the zoo. Anyways, am I the only person (from reading this info) that is thrilled about the aquarium
But not so thrilled that there will be less exhibits and species?

It would sit well in the introduction / general threads. But I assume it is OK with most here.

Welcome Tyler. Enjoy the views and open forum. Perhaps you can share your perspectives with us, be they on the daily goings at Toledo Zoo or any other place that interest you/us.
