Top 30 UK zoos

Brilliant! Thanks a lot Chris, and I'll be saving those numbers onto a file for further reference.

Thanks Chris for yet another interesting read. I see most zoo's bar a few seem to be increasing year by year, im quite suprised with all the developments though that Highland Park actaully decreased a bit.

I would expect an increase at the HWP this year, but I think the overall figures for 2008 will show a downward trend. London and Chester certainly haven't made any press releases about passing 1 million visitors yet, which they both had at this stage last year.

I'm guessing that is because of the current economic climate and the fact that neither Chester and London have opened a mega exhibit this year (cheetahs or birds won't draw in the same visitor numbers as Orangs and Gorillas)

Edit: and the horrible summer we've had may have put off the ususal fair weather visitors

I think Chester has past the million but its no long news now when they do so nothing was made of it!!!

I would be surprised if they didn't with the lion cub & baby rhino. Its old news ow they have passed the mark two/three years on the row.

So Chester might not achieve last year's visitor total but it will not be a disastrous season . Zoo days will no doubt boost visitors and there is the Frost Fair to come .

Dublin Zoo reported a record number of visitors last year.

The zoo, which celebrated the new year with the birth of a baby giraffe on January 4th, attracted 931,866 visitors in 2008, 26,000 more than in 2007 which was in itself a record year. The zoo believes a baby boom last year helped it to record figures.

Good to see things looking so much better for London and Dublin zoos , it was not that long ago that both were in very serious trouble .

@Chris: I just wanted to thank you for posting the attendance numbers on this thread, and the updated list on page 3 is one that I saved onto my computer as soon as I saw it here on ZooChat. Is there any chance of locating 2008 numbers? I'd be intrigued to see what has happened to Edinburgh Zoo with the surge of popularity because of the chimpanzees.

@Gentle Giant: is there a change that Dublin Zoo could receive a million visitors in 2009? It's amazing how that zoo has transformed itself over the years.

Banham Zoo is my local Zoo so it's good to see it up there in the top 30. It was voted as in the top three Zoos a couple of years ago.

BBC NEWS | UK | England visitor numbers 'rising'

Chester Zoo has been named in the top 10 English paid for attractions alongside:
- Westminister Abbey etc

I don't believe these figures, perhaps they were made up by bored work experience student on a wet afternoon.
Tate Liverpool is free (Tate Britain and Tate Modern, both in London, are in high in the list of free attractions). As Pertinax has pointed out Alton Towers gets around 2.5 million visitors a year - so it certainly belongs in the top ten. I'm sure I could shoot more holes in them with a little more research.
