Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Animal Names

The snow goose gosling was named Ryan Gosling. I love when we go for the fun names. His parents are Misty and Janis. The zoo is now down to 4 birds so the last is Han just to update all the names.

And while I am posting lets note the other changes I happen to remember.

Add
Hamerkop - MC Hamerkop (F)
Goats - Easter Bunny (M), Mollie Bean (F), Romeo (M), Moonshine (M) arrived
Przewalski's horse - Ryder (M)
Red Fox - Todd (M)
Aplomado Falcon - Zaya (F)

Remove
Hamerkop - Homer (M)
Kangaroo - Tully (M), Mudgee (F), Alice (F)
Cheetah - Emma (F)
Penguins - Buddy (M) and Squeak (F)
Jaguar - Zambucca (F)
Bison - Garth (M)
Tawny Frogmouth - Makepeace (M)
Secretary Bird - Katani (M)
Blue Crowned Mot Mot - Tom Tom (M)
Blue Fairy Bird - Ira (M)
Meerkats - Bill (M), Tara (F) and Lafayette (F)
Lynx - Hamiltion (F)

There are probably others on the list that need to be removed and others that could be added.
What happened to Homer the hamerkop, Garth the bison and the meerkats? I never heard anything about them but all the other on the list are definitely no longer there and have passed…

@Kalvin, you are the best! Seriously thanks for all the changes. Some changes were already made like Pinnocchio thanks to your previous comments.

The seriema is actually now Jean. They had a live with her somewhat recently. They swapped them so Nadine could now get a chance to breed which is nice for her.

Scarlet Ibis for your notes Rico is the male and Rouge is a female.

If the zoo even still has the mole rats Lexi is dead. There was a facebook live with them in summer 2020 when the keep said the queen had died 6 or so months previously and oddly no new female had taken over yet.

Are you positive there are still 2 cape shelducks? I was under the impression Lila had died. I could be wrong though because I cant for the life of me remember where I got that idea.

Again super thrilled you could help with the list.

@Kevin2342, Garth died old age. Homer went to Calgary to breed and the last 3 meerkats died of old age over the winter.

I'm fairly certain there are still two shelducks, as of this summer but I can't remember for certain. The rainforest boardwalk has reopened though, so anyone is welcome to check and confirm that

Lol, fair enough. New mission for the next person who visits.

Oh and I don't know if you watch the lives but in the last few days I have learned one of the female bison is named Terry and a female black breasted leaf turtle is named Baby.

Thoughts on having some sort of google drive or some platform where we could have a published list of current animals and names. Maybe even birthdays? I don't know what the best platform would be. But the idea is it would be linked to this thread and easily editable. Thoughts?

@Jefferson, the idea sounds good but I'm not about to open my list up for editing by anyone but myself. Sounds harsh but it means I get to control what gets changed and when and that I know its changed. When I make a change I know who the source of the change is and whether I trust the info or not. I have spent almost a decade carefully tracking it. If we have an open document someone could come in and muck it all up. Our little group has faced trolls in the past and they just create chaos because they think its fun. Plus there have been past members who spouted info that wasn't correct because they either just through they were geniuses or didn't know the right people to talk to for good intel. Took awhile for us to sort out their info could never be trusted. If I stay in total control of my list then I know if the source is reliable or not and I get to decide if a change is made or just noted as possible until I have further confirmation. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm ripping up your idea. I don't mean to but I really want to protect my meticulously organized and researched baby. It's a great idea I would love to jump on in a perfect world.

Personally I think what we have here is working ok. Im happy to repost the list as up to date as possible upon request and try to make sure I do up date it every spring with all we have learned as a group. However I dont speak for everyone. Only myself. If others want to work on that project I will provide an updated list to get them started no problem.

If you would like a current birthday list that is definitely something I can do up for you. I had one I put out several years ago but no one at the time seemed interested in it so I didn't keep it up. Thought it was an interesting thing for anyone who might want to visit a certain friend on their birthday. Zero problem for me if you want a new one I can do it. Happy to since you are interested. Just need to know if you want it organized by species or date? Then my crazy wheels will start spinning and I would probably post it for you in a few days.

@TZFan you could have a google doc or sheets that you have sole editing control over that is shared publicly viewable? Also if you do have a list of birthdays I would really love to see it! Thanks for keeping such good track of all the names, I’ve appreciated having the list for reference!!!

@Rhayasunshine, first off welcome! Glad to have another zoo fan joining out ranks. Hope you will feel welcome and comfortable jumping in and talking with us. Its a great group.

I have a google doc I have very carefully managed over the past 10 years. Some things are probably out of date but with the bigger animals I'm pretty rock solid. I have kept it completely private to maintain total control and keep my own privacy. I do update this thread at least once a year with as current a list as I have but I will happily update it at any time upon request. I also add names here and there when I learn them and if someone updates names here or posts about new or dead animals in other threads I make alterations. Happy to share all of this at any time.

I did post another thread with the updated birthday list the other day so feel free to check it out also if you know birthdays I dont have feel free to post it and Ill edit the master copy.

If you like reference docs check out the family tree thread. I posted the link the last page because it has the index. But you can see every species I was able to either piece together a history for or a full on family tree. 8 months of dedicated research created an amazingly detailed reference doc. Feel free to check it out if it interest you. If not no worries.

Family Trees of Toronto Zoo Animals [Toronto Zoo]

Again welcome! Glad to have another person who likes these little nitty gritty details around.

@Kalvin, do you know if its a male or female frogmouth? Unfortunately Erkle is impossible to take an educated guess with.

I felt like it would be a male name. Cool thanks. Do you know if there is any movement on getting a female to join him?

I haven't heard anything but it would be nice. He certainly looks much more lively than Makepeace so he's probably a lot younger and may be of prime breeding age.

Lol Makepeace was the oldest on record in North America at the time of his death and was about 7 years older than his closest competition.

Worked a little magic and Erkle is an 8 year old male. Sadly odds are pretty low of him getting a mate. Found out he is super low ranking. There is only one male less valuable than him. He could get a mate if we were gifted a super high ranking female but it's probably unlikely. He's likely just going to be a display animal. Bummer. Wish we could have gone back to breeding. Makepeace had been born here.

Updating the list. Im sure some need to be removed and some added.

Fiddles the Woodchuck is female.
Tommy is the only Striped Skunk in the Zoo now.

Oops I left Maynard and Stevie on there.

There probably is 3 male mouflon. I just dont know the names of all of them.

Ah finally I know whats up with the bettong! I have been wondering all pandemic.

Well one less yak now.

Huh I have always thought Fiddles was male.

I wondered about Tommy being the only skunk. They only show him.

What happened to the other bettongs that were off display?

The other bettongs were supposed to be shipped out. They all were. Covid slowed the pace of placing them in new homes down.
