Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths, and Transfers, 2019

Tree kangaroo Collins was euthanized on November 28 due to a rapidly worsening chronic respiratory issue.

From TZ facebook:

We are saddened to announce that Collins, our 5-year old male Matschie's Tree Kangaroo, was euthanized on Thursday, November 28. Collins, who lived in the Australasia Pavilion, had been undergoing treatment for a chronic respiratory issue. In order to evaluate his condition, our veterinary staff took Collins to Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital for a CT scan. Unfortunately, the tests revealed that his lung condition had significantly deteriorated, and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

Collins lived at the Toronto Zoo for the past three years and was a valuable member of the Matschie's Tree Kangaroo Species Survival Plan. We recently received a female tree kangaroo, Puzzle, from the Kansas City Zoo and were planning on introducing the pair for breeding. As the Matchie's Tree Kangaroo is an endangered species we were hopeful that Collins and Puzzle would produce a joey in the near future and we are saddened to have lost this opportunity.

Collins was well-loved by staff and will be missed by all who worked with him.

Red Pandas Ila and Suva have been together peacefully since 12/11 so hopefully they will breed.

Amur Kira finally left for Granby and Mazyria was moved from the Health Centre to the exhibit holdings last week but was not out yet last Wednesday.

Grey-Crowned Crane 0.1 has died, leaving 1.0.

White-crested Laughing Thrush Megan has died. She was the spunky one who seemed to do just fine although missing a foot.

Caribou - another has died, don't know which one.

As 2019 draws to a close here's a recap of the animal changes at the zoo. By no means do I think I have caught everything but a fairly good list of the changes.

I missed a few transfers out.

Zebra - Leia to San Diego.
Przewalski's horse - either Pheonix or Genghis to Granby. It was one of two castrated males. Dudley has to have stayed on as breeding male.

Przwalski Horses - I was mistakenly informed by volunteers who were mistakenly informed by a circular they get that 1.0 Prz. moved out in October. I passed the info. to TZFan and we deduced that it must have been Genghis so it was included in the post above. Yesterday I learned from a keeper in that area who is very involved with them that no Prz. have gone anywhere, so who knows how that item came about.
