Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Births, Deaths and Transfers 2021

@Hyak_II you blow me away with the detailed knowledge you have of certain things but then again should I be anymore? No I choose to live in awe of you. More fun that way.

I am intrigued with Paprika being harness trained and well socialized with people. Maybe I can live out my fantasy of petting a red panda or at least feeding it. No, no dont dream. It will be crushing if it never happens and I dream of it. Never thought about it until I saw they do that at Zoo Australia. Since then I have been interested in the opportunity if it ever happened anywhere in Canada.

Interesting they wont go with keepers. I thought the majority if bigger, and medium sized mammals did go with a keeper to help with transition. Is it just the biggest ones and most socially complex?

Toronto could house 3 adults as they did awhile back when we had Ralphie, Cassie and I want to say Kayah... something with a K. We may have had 4 adults at one time in the past but that would be a very distant past and probably wouldnt be allowed today due to space requirements. Its not like the barn or exhibit has had a major up date in forever. It wouldnt even be hard to house all three. Adira is still living with Suva so they can still be kept together.

This years 6 Vancouver Island marmot pups have been transferred to the Tony Barrett Mount Washington Marmot Recovery Centre where they will hibernate for the winter before being dispersed to release sites. They will bring the number of marmot pups released by the zoo to 140! The zoo also announced 2 2 litters born this year in the wild were born to Toronto born parents which is another huge success.

OH MY GOD YES

This is perfect on so many levels. Not only are we finally getting another orang baby after so many years but it'll be here in time for the opening of the outdoor exhibit! Now we just need to cross our fingers and hope everything goes perfectly. With this plus Mstari's second next year is gonna be crazy for the zoo

This is great news. Baby Orangutan just in time for the completion of the new outdoor exhibit will definitely bring in the crowds, which the zoo sorely needs. 2022 is looking up for the zoo for sure, assuming everything lines up accordingly.

FINALLY!!! 2022 may be the best year yet for the zoo! They have two confirmed babies who will definitely be mega draws and if they get their butts in gear a brand new orang exhibit housing one of those little rock stars. Credit to the zoo because both the orang infant and the giraffe calf are due early in the spring so they will really be able to capitalize on the births with huge interest maybe in April for both but definitely by May, kinda depends when exactly they arrive in April. Now if they can get Budi and Ramai to make magic happen in the next month or two we will have something incredible, two newborn orangs for the new exhibit.

With red panda Paprika arriving this month there is a shot at spring or summer red panda cubs (who sadly likely wont be visible until late summer or sometime in the fall). They will bring in the cute factor if we get lucky enough.

Let's hope we get snow leopard male, Pemba, soon too so we have a shot at spring snow leopard cubs. They are probably our best shot at a cubs, though the cheetahs are a chance too.

There are other various babies that are possible for 2022 across the zoo that are less big ticket draws but would still help the zoo out big time with recovery.

Great to hear and can’t wait, can’t believe Budi is a father soon, I still remember him as such a young infant with sister Jahe (Now at Memphis) and mom Puppe (Oldest Orangutan in North America currently).

I really hope Puppe makes it long enough to first be outside for a little bit but I also want her to be able to see her grandchild. I know she probably has no clue but she loves human babies so much I bet she would love to see a baby orang. Sadly we will never see them interact unless keepers film it for us.... Please, please, please keepers film and share.

I think Budi will be adorable with a baby. He seems very interested in and gentle with Sekali. I can picture him reaching out with a huge finger gently trying to touch his baby. I also see Sekali catching that and walking away.

Budi will hopefully make a great dad, since his father was such a gentle giant, Molek would always play a role with him and Jingaa, Just too bad he passed early on in his fathering days, but great that Jahe and Budi can still carry out those bloodlines of him and Puppe.

I'm getting good vibes about Puppe making it to next year, remember with Jo we started to hear that she was deteriorating a while before she passed but we haven't had any such news for Puppe, she looked normal in the birthday video they posted last week. Obviously I might be completely wrong since I have no idea but it's good to keep optimistic about these things

You are right @hyena142 we did hear rumblings when gorilla Josephine took a turn for the worse and we have that first release telling us Charles is slowing down too. Puppe has been healthy and they have said nothing. But Puppe is a 54 year old orangutan who just might not wake up one morning. Charles same thing. Hes a 48 year old male gorilla. There are only 2 other males older than him and one the same age. Any morning keepers could come in and Charles or Puppe could be gone. I bet their keepers come in daily thinking please be alive. They are both just so old. I do wonder which one will be the final 1974 animal. Puppe is already the final opening day animal left.

This isn't really a transfer but I figured there's nowhere else for it. The zoo just announced that red fox Todd dug his way out of his exhibit and made a run for it on September 12, and he hasn't been found yet. If any of you live near the zoo and find a seemingly tame fox you suspect might be Todd, the zoo has left a contact number on their socials for you to call.

Oh wow! That is embarrassing for the zoo. Way to alert the public a month too late. Best chance at getting help from the community was just after he disappeared. By now he could be dead or who knows how far away from the zoo. Lucky for Todd he escaped into his best shot at survival, the Rouge. Good luck Todd.

Ha! The zoo didn't realize the can of worms they were opening when they announced Todd the fox was missing. They got flooded with "helpful" tips. Now they have an email set up for tips ToddTheFox@torontozoo.ca. They also realized they should have told people not to approach the "Todd" they see because it is very likely a wild fox and not Todd. I laughed hard reading the updated post because both of those things were so obviously missing from the post this morning. People want to help and they told them Todd was friendly so of course people think they can just walk up to their "Todd". Funny they didn't anticipate those two problems. It's probably why they didn't announce the great escape before now but if they already realized that would be the problem then the original post needed to remind people foxes are not friends and preparing for the flood of "help".

Grey kangaroo, Syndey's joey is a girl!!! After 3 boys Simon finally gave us a girl we can start to rebuild the mob with. Shes started emerging from the pouch for those of you who want to see her on their next outting.

The zoo just announced that white rhino Theo will soon be departing for the Greater Vancouver Zoo. No set date yet but according to them we'll learn more about his journey there once he arrives. Theo fans make sure you get in one last visit!

As sad as it is to see Theo leave it does bode well for our future prospects of white rhino calves now that we'll be down to just Tom and the girls again, I'm pretty sure last we heard things were on pause because they were worried they didn't have room for 5 adult rhinos but with Theo gone maybe they'll start the program up again?

There is little doubt they will go back to trying to breed desperately. The clock is ticking on Sabi. I wouldnt be surprised if they started to put Tom in with them before Theo leaves in hopes that one or two are bred. They have a green light from the SSP for 2 rhino calves and they desperately want Sabi breeding.

It's sad Theo is going but he was never meant to stay. Maybe if he had been born to elderly parents but Tom and Zohari are still rhino wise pretty darn young. Vancouver will be a decent home for him with their plans to do a new savanna.

I kinda wonder now did the zoo half lie to us this summer about rhino breeding. Yes maybe they arent breeding Zohari this summer because there is already a baby on board. There was suspicion last fall she might be newly pregnant and if there is a calf due it would arrive late winter 2022. I wont hold out great hope but that would definitely be a great thing for next summer. If they are starting to breed now or next summer we are in for a long long wait.

Has there been any sign of Todd yet? :c

Also, I'm so happy to hear about the baby orangutan on the way! This is great for both conservation progress and the zoo--imagine how many visitors the arrival of a baby orangutan alongside the long-awaited opening of the outdoor habitat will draw in!

The zoo hasn't mentioned anything since announcing he escaped. Sad even a fox doesn't want to stay down in the domain. Lol. Im sure they have had hundreds of tips from people seeing wild foxes if Facebook is any indication. Todd is probably gone for good. Its been more than a month since his escape. Good thing is he is in the best spot possible if he had to be released in Toronto.

I bet by the time the new orang exhibit opens sometime next year there will be two orang infants, possibly one of them due sometime by years end but if it arrives in 2022 I say it counts. Budi is a proven sire so its just a matter of time before Ramai is pregnant too.
