Prince Theo the Boelen's python passed away, the tank is empty currently, one keeper said they gonna move some Red-tailed Green Ratsnakes from the Australasia Pavillion to here. So sad they don't get some new species.
Thats sad, Boelen's pythons are rare animals in zoo. It is quite rare to see them.

Do someone know when the hippos gonna go and where they are gonna go to?

To the best of my knowledge the zoo is still trying to find a home for the girls. The search was halted during covid and now that the zoo has been getting animals across the border for the last year they may be seriously searching again. It might be trickier to find them a home because as @Nile Hippo Expert said they are older post reproductive females. We are just gonna have to wait and see what the future brings for them.

One of the lionesses took a fall today (not sure which because I was there when it happened and couldn't tell, I think it was Lemon) and the zoo has updated the off-exhibit list on their website to include them. She was sparring with the other female and got pushed off the back of the exhibit. Fingers crossed everything turns out alright

The zoo has announced that upon completion of the third Amur tiger exhibit, Sumatran tigers Hari and Kemala will be moved to the Amur tiger complex as their exhibits will be undergoing heavy changes soon due to the need to update the Indo-Malaya to Africa boardwalk.

oh that does make a lot of sense - did they say for how long?

I know it breaks the geographic rules - but it'll be interesting in the short term to do a more immediate compare of the two species when they're located so closely to each other

@Zooer I heard this from Zoolife so no dates but I imagine it could be for a while. This is just me assuming so take it with a grain of salt but I think there's a non-zero chance that the current Sumatran exhibits are demolished as part of the ramp update, the zoo needs to build the ramp in a way that makes it both meet accessibility requirements and not interfere with the protected trees, and on top of that the Indo to Africa ramp is a tighter squeeze than the Africa to Americas ramp was. A good way to free up space to meet the requirements and avoid the trees would be to just take down those old exhibits, the Sumatrans are set to take over the Indian rhino exhibit sometime in the future anyways so it's not like we need them in the long term. I wouldn't be surprised if they took over the Amur exhibit for the time being and once Mazy passes we just go without breeding Amurs for a while (again), then when the time comes the Sumatrans will move to their new home and the Amur program can restart.

It'll definitely be interesting seeing how big female Amur Mazy is compared to male Sumatran Hari when they're in close quarters like that

First off love the names, ideally those names would be attached to llamas but I'll accept them as armadillos since we don't have llamas anymore. Kronk is especially adorable

Very interesting we got males from two different species, I was hoping we'd get a breeding pair but honestly I can't complain, these are the zoo's first armadillos ever so it's great just to have them.

The one thing that stuck out to me is that the zoo says they won't be on display until spring and they won't confirm what exhibit they'll be in. Not on exhibit til spring implies they'll be outside. Maybe they're gonna take up residence in the capybara exhibit? Or maybe the zoo is gonna surprise us over the winter and build them a brand new exhibit in time for the 50th? Lord knows there's more than enough room in Americas for one. Either that or they end up in the Kids Zoo which would be disappointing

EDIT: I just checked the zoo's instagram, it says the armadillos will be in the Discovery Zone. It also says that the keepers will occasionally be taking them out on tours of the zoo for guests to encounter while they wait for their new home to be ready, so might be a good idea to keep your eyes peeled for them on visits this winter

The Zoo announced today that Red Pandas Paprika and Suva will be moving to new homes, both on SSP breeding recommendation. Paprika to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, and Suva to Assiniboine.

The Toronto Zoo will be receiving 10-year old Sakura from the Greater Vancouver Zoo, who will live at the zoo ahead of and during the red panda renovation in the coming years.

Before everyone freaks out over our breeding pair leaving in exchange for a solo female it's important to remember that this is happening because the red panda exhibit is gonna be going under construction probably next year to add the new indoor viewing. Breeding isn't recommended during construction so even if they stayed Suva and Paprika wouldn't be able to breed during this period. It's better they find homes where they'll be put to good use (especially Suva as a proven sire) than be wasted here.

Still I'm sad to see Suva go, he was always a very entertaining red panda whenever you caught him awake. Hopefully they'll also be able to send Sakura away and nab a new breeding pair as soon as construction is done, Toronto's whole thing is red pandas now thanks to Pixar so if anyone deserves that it's us

Sakura is also to be joined by Suva's granddad and Paprika's dad, Kalden from Edmonton. He's been sterilized so zero chance of cubs. I mean plans could have changed but he is supposed to come here as well. They might just be worried about those moves first and will bring him in once Sakura has settled in. Getting Suva and Paprika out and quarantined ahead of breeding season is the most important thing since they are to breed.

This is unbelievably huge and exciting news! We wasted Pemba and his killer genes for far too long, having cubs be a possibility again has been a long time coming! Hope Jita settles in nicely and we can begin introductions asap

I have long suspected Jita would be the mate for Pemba, since she was born really. She's already in Canada. She's not a fantastic choice genetically but Pemba is so stellar it wont matter. The cubs will rank pretty high. And great news is she is already two so if they can get her settled in quick enough there is a chance of summer cubs. Spring is not gonna happen with quarantine, time to settle and a 3 to 3 1/2 month pregnancy, and at least 8 weeks (sometimes up to 12) before they are ready to go out. Cub math might just make more sense to give Jita 2024 to settle in and wait til 2025 for cubs timed better. I think they will try if they can for the 50th.
