Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo- Births, Deaths, Arrivals and Departures 2014

I saw the electric eel in its tank on Monday so unless it passed away in the past few days, it should still be there.

A snapping turtle has been in that exhibit for the past few years. An alligator snapping turtle used to live there, but it was sent to a zoo in Florida.

I thought it was bigger maybe that is why the keepers were trying to feed the snapping turtle with tongs but it wouldn't eat she said to another keeper they would just keep trying different food so I don't know if it was new or just a new way of feeding it

Some news updates for everyone...

Arctic fox, Jupiter, was put down after an illness.

Moose, Cherry and Saro, have reportedly left for new homes. Now if we could find homes for Lilly and Trilly they could breed again.

Kudu, Rio, has gone to Parc Safari now that shes a year old. This should free up space for a replacement for Daisy who passed last year but then again Ramosita could be pregnant again since she and Owen have produced calves every year for the last 3 years (Ogden, Odin and Rio). We will have to keep an eye out to see what happens here.

3 of the Barbary Apes have also left. I dont know where they went, when they went or where... though Safari Niagara is one of the few places in 3 places in North America with a troop (Toronto and a sanctuary being the others).

Lots of goings recently but hopefully that means there will be new arrivals soon or by spring.

Oh speaking of arrivals... dont waste your time looking for the clouded leopards through the tiny slits in the cover. They arent there anymore. Pavarti got sick so they were moved to the health center for treatment and monitoring. Dont worry shes recovered but they will stay in the health center to further bond and complete quarantine.

I have also heard rumblings from multiple people who have spoke to keepers that the watusi may well have arrived. If this is true... seems early since the old giraffe barn hasnt even been ripped down... they would have just arrived and be in quarantine. I have no when they would go on display but it would be late September at the earliest if you take a 30 day quarantine. Again while it have heard it from several people that doesnt mean its true... we all know how rumors work.

Well, some of that news sucks. Sad to hear about Arctic fox Jupiter being put down. The other animals being sent away isn't that bad, as it makes room for news young ones.

Last time I visited the zoo, I remember the zoomobile commentator saying different names for the Barbary Apes. I believe it was 2 females. I can't quite remember.

Any idea how much Watusi we'll be getting? I saw some on my trip to Florida, and they are quite formidable looking animals.

The commentators might be up to date with who is in the exhibit but the odds of that seem low considering how often they have been wrong this year. The zoo had males Blue and Rocky (Blue being the 3 legged cancer survivor), and females Shannon, Pinky, Zsa zsa and Leah. They were kept in two groups of three, probably with a male and two females in each but Im not certain. When it comes to them its 3 down, 3 to go. Sooner they are gone the sooner the zoo might start looking at and talking about the Canadian Wilderness.

I dont know how many arrived or even what gender they would be. There is also a chance that this isnt the whole herd that has arrived. Without the barn being built yet maybe its just the first installment. Still weird to me to bother getting them for fall. Do the work on the barn and then in the spring bring in the animals. If they had gone for it so they would have been on display once the giraffes moved in June ok. But at this point their arrival wont really have much benefit. But maybe their arrival was delayed much like the clouded leopards and they took them now so they didnt lose them. Who knows.

Update
I just found out it is Shannon and Pinky on exhibit with Zsa Zsa off exhibit because she doesnt get along. Therefore its Blue, Rocky and Leah who left.

My brother informed me that the Zoo revealed on facebook that a Burmese Star Tortoise has hatched in incubation. The first to hatch in Canada

Interesting thing from the keepers twitter. In response to a question about new things at the zoo they said that, "Eurasia is rumored to possibly almost maybe ready this winter. Also snow, there may be snow added to exhibits." I have no clue what the heck they are talking about with the snow but sounds like keepers dont even know when Eurasia might open. While the sentence is extremely muddled sounds to me like maybe by winter. Fall might have slipped away too. If thats the case then they definitely should leave it closed until spring. I dont think they would get many additional visits to explore a new exhibit under snow.

More on the tortoise hatching.

I saw a baby star tortoise in the Indomalaya Pavilion last week. It was in a small tank inside the tortoise exhibit. I'm not sure if it was the same one mentioned on the zoo's Facebook.

The question asked was specifically about what will be new at the Zoo this winter, so I believe the snow part just has to do with the fact that there's no snow in the summer, but there should be this winter.

Oh the snows a joke... I totally missed that. Oops. That should have occurred to me. Brain fart moment.

With it being a nice day today, I headed out to the zoo. Here’s what I noticed.

Got there early so I went to check out the Pandas. They were sleeping as usual, but I did notice that there is now a Restricted Access sign on the door that leads to Da Mao’s fence. Never noticed the door being there prior to that recent incident.

Around 9:30 I went to the zoomobile. Never been on it during the first ride of the day. The commentator was horrible. They made up all kinds of stuff like, Warthogs have no natural predators, and that Dhole’s steal food from Lions and Hyenas. I’m guessing he is extremely uninformed about the animals. On the plus side, I got some shots of one of the baby Yaks walking around. Mouflon were in the exhibit as well. My afternoon ride went much better.

The newly hatched Burmese Star Tortoise is in the exhibit with the other tortoises, but still in its incubator. I couldn’t see it all that well do to the fact that it was hiding under and piece of wood.

While watching the Gorillas, I saw Sadiki vomit, only to watch Nassir and Ngozi rush over to eat it up. Apparently, this is something seen in a lot of livestock and captive animals (primates included), but it has not been seen with Gorillas in the wild. Either way, it was quite the sight, and a little disturbing.

The 3 White Rhinos are still altogether. Zohari is still defensive with Tom. Sabi doesn’t seem to mind his presence, but Zohari doesn’t let Tom close to her either.

Sable Antelopes were pretty active, with the male chasing around the female, and even tasting her urine. I think it might be mating season for them. Not sure on their names much less their breeding status.

Finally found out why the Otters have been separated, as I finally got a chance to speak with a Keeper. Now, I’m not sure on their names so bear with me. As most of you know, they are both female. The older Otter is the one inside. The reason for their separation is that it’s mating season. Since these Otters are naturally solitary animals they fight during mating season, because of hormone levels changing. Usually in the past they were able to keep the girls together, but in recent years, the older Otter has been losing some of her vision, so she gets beat up pretty bad by the younger Otter. They’re split up because it’s no longer a fair fight. In the past they didn’t really injure each other.

Oh cypher you should call into the zoo and report that commentator. If they dont even know that the dholes being in Eurasia have nothing to do with lions and hyenas who live in Africa, thats no good. And I guess all of those documentaries I have watched since childhood must be wrong. I could swear I had seen lions, hyenas, leopards and African Wild Dogs kill warthogs, to name a few. Clearly Im mistaken... He needs to be taken off the mic. I know its the last weekend and he will probably go but they need to know hes not worth hiring again. Wow thats disappointing that if he doesnt know things he cant just use the script. Its why they have the script. And because you know it was the first trip round they will know exactly which person you're talking about.

And thanks ever so much for the lovely picture of the gorillas. Eww.

The female rhinos do let Tom near them. Many have seen mating attempts. The just must not have been in the mood.

I can answer your sable questions. Their names are Puff Daddy, Millie and Savannah. Their breeding status should be do not breed. The girls are a fair bit older than Puff Daddy, late teens I think. They might let them do their thing but dont count on babies at all.

The otters are Maria and Talise. Maria is 14 or 15 years old now. Talise is three maybe 4 and now fully mature. Odds are that Talise is increasingly testy is that she is now mature and so even if Maria were fully sighted they would have to pull one. Hopefully a new male will arrive to Talise and Maria could be retired.

I've also heard on the zoomobile that dholes have been known to steal food from lions and hyenas multiple times on the zoomobile cypher! I don't think it's just him that's said it because I'm 90% sure I've had a female commentator say that as well!

Although the commentator didn't say african lions when they said it which is the lion that many people think of when they hear the word lion but there are, in fact, lions in Asia (asiatic lions) and striped hyenas can also be found in parts of asia as well so it could be possible that the commentator wasn't completely wrong.

I had a commentator say it. Seems like the majority of them need retrained, or they need to read strictly off the script.

The territory range of Dholes and Asiatic Lions don't really come into contact with each other. Stripped Hyenas is more plausible, but Tigers, Leopards and Bears are what Dhole are usually seen interacting and stealing food from.

On my last zoomobile ride the commentator actually gave the right information and said that dholes steal food from tigers and bears. I'm glad that at least some of them know what they're talking about.

Yeah, I've heard plenty of commentators say the right things, but this case was one of the worse I heard.

Alright time for a discussion change. I was talking with my brother about the gorillas, and we were wondering what would happen if Charles passes away by the end of the year. How long would it be before the zoo is able to bring in a new male?

Discussion came about because we were talking about our recent tripp to Disney's Animal Kingdom, which has at least 4 (I think they said they have 5) silverbacks together.
