Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo - Developments 2016

Nice day today, so I decided to head over to the zoo.

Panda’s Er Shun and cubs were restricted to the indoor exhibit, as there was maintenance being done in the outdoor exhibit. Part of that maintenance looked to ne the installation of a Telus webcam for the outdoor section of the exhibit. Allowing for viewers to toggle between the indoor and outdoor viewings will definitely help with the overall viewing experience online.

Snow Leopard, Ena was on exhibit. Pretty active after she broke out of her trance on a visible Chamois across the road. She’s always a joy to watch when active in the exhibit.

Nothing particular interesting going on in the Tundra Trek, so much so, that I’m finding the area to be more of a chore with little payoff in seeing animals. I understand that it’s not completely the Keeper’s fault for the lack of animals, but some animals can be handled better to avoid people looking at the Trek being a complete waste of time. Polar Bears being the main example. In the mornings that I’ve gone, the second yard is usually empty, which most people around me get pretty ticked off about. I feel the exhibit needs to be occupied more often with the bears. Too often they are indoors, for any number of reasons, which just isn’t great for the public. On multiple occasions I’ve seen people avoid the Trek due to past experiences of seeing nothing interesting.

Also, they need to do something with the old Arctic Fox exhibit. When people see Snow Geese in the exhibit, they for the most part just keep walking, especially since they just saw Snow Geese in the Snow Geese exhibit. The Reindeer exhibit is another one that needs more happening. It’s just so big and empty with only one Reindeer. Currently seems like a waste of space.

The America Pavilion, specifically the indoor Primate area, is undergoing some cosmetic renovations. The wall across the exhibits are being painted with a mural along with what looks like tree stump seating.

Also in the America Pavilion, the Spiny Softshell Turtle exhibit is still under construction. The Softshell Turtle was moved to the Midland Painted Turtle exhibit, where, today it was harassing any Painted Turtles that went in the water. A Keeper that noticed the harassing kept an eye on things, later deciding that one of the species will have to be moved from the exhibit if it continues.

Saw the Barn Owl out of his little box for the first time today. This may have been confirmed before, I just can’t remember, but I can safely say that he’s missing about half of his left wing, thereby making him unable to fly.

Jaguars and Spider Monkey’s were not out today. There were fences blocking the pathway behind the waterfall and the entrance into the Jaguar building. Signage mentioned exhibit maintenance, but weirdly enough there was a danger sign, which you don’t usually see when sections are blocked off for maintenance. It was almost as if 1 or both Jaguars were being moved out of the enclosure and into a vehicle, although I can’t confirm that, as it’s just speculation on my part. Flamingos and Macaws were on exhibit.

White Rhino Tom is still with the girls, for anyone wondering.

New Zebra filly was on exhibit for the first time today with mom Tori and females Lori Anne and Leia. Tori was very protective of her newborn, keeping the other girls away with kicks and biting, although for the most part, there was no contact. Leia was extremely interested in the new filly, often trying to assert her dominance. Tori would chase Leia away, as the filly ran for safety behind Tori. There were Keepers on watch all day making sure everything went well.

White Lion cub, Hank, is under veterinarian care after he tried going after Fintan’s food, I’m assuming on exhibit, as they’re fed separately off exhibit. Fintan apparently injured Hank to the point that Hank was limping around.

Went to the zoo again today. Couple noteworthy things from this visit.

Orangutans Budi and Puppe were on exhibit only. Usually they’re paired with Kembali, but he was no where to be seen. Could be something or could be nothing.

Gorillas were indoors, despite the nice weather. It may have been because the morning was bit cooler, or it could’ve been the construction going just beyond the Gorilla climb. Although I’ve seen the Gorilla’s out before when there was construction in that area.

Tawny lions were out.

Zebra’s are still figuring things out. Leia is continuing to chased the newborn, who may or may not be named Rey. Not sure. Anyways, Tori continues to shut Leia down, chasing and kicking at her.

Side note, Rey is the name of the main character from the new Star Wars movie that came out last year. Seeing as how her older siblings were named Luke and Leia, after Star Wars characters, Rey doesn’t sound too far off as a possibility, especially since the new Zebra is being described as “strong and confident”, which is how Rey from Star Wars was described.

And the big news from my visit. White Rhino Tony was out with the girls for the first time ever. There were 2 Keepers out to watch them. Apparently, for the first 20 minutes of being on exhibit with each other, Tony chased Zohari all throughout the exhibit, in a seemingly threatening manner. Zohari even ran into the moat a couple times to get away from Tony. Sabi, uncharacteristically, watched the chase instead of teaming up with Zohari to ward off Tony. Sabi would grunt and “yell” at Tony, whenever he approached her.

Eventually the chase ended, with Sabi finally giving Zohari backup. Tony, tired from the running, went to start eating from the abundance of food put out for them. The girls did the same thing, staying close to each other, while keeping an eye out for Tony.

For those that don’t know, Tony was always a worry to put with the girls, because he has experience fighting, due to growing up with other larger male Rhinos. They spared with each other as youngsters usually do when growing up with each other. Tom grew up with elderly females, and is, as the Keepers say, a big softy. Tony not so much.

Now, the reason Tony has been put with the girls is because Sabi is scheduled to be cycling this weekend, assuming she’s not already pregnant. She did miss her last cycle, meaning she could be pregnant, or she just skipped a cycle after the breeding. If she is pregnant, because it’s so early, it is possible she could reabsorb it, which is common with Rhinos. However, she has been showing signs that she’s going to be cycling, which is why Tony is with them.

Last thing a Keeper mentioned is that even if only 1 of the White Rhinos has a calf, the Keepers feel that 1 of the boys will have to be sent away to free up room in the barn.

Found out today from one of the Africa keepers that the zebra filly's name is Ray.

Also, one of the White rhino keepers was doing observations...Tony was put out with the girls for the first time today. He said Sabi should be cycling in about a week.

Thanks for the updates cypher. Did you notice if the Jaguars/spider monkeys were out today, or was that area still closed?

This afternoon, part of the waterfall was closed off because of repairs on the Mayan Temple roof. The spiders monkeys & jaguars were out...quite active, but didn't seem bothered by the noise...Luca was even climbing the tree heading towards the roof!

So they did name her Rey. Interesting that it's not mentioned in any media by the zoo, aside from articles written up about her.

Also, the Mayan Temple was scheduled for maintenance back in July. Would be surprised if it was pushed to around now.

Orangutans Budi and Puppe were on exhibit only. Usually they’re paired with Kembali, but he was no where to be seen. Could be something or could be nothing.

My last visit Kembali was being a real jerk to Puppe. He was tugging at her fur and hitting her and grabbing her. She tried to get away and he would just follow. It was a lot of intimidation on his part. Luckily Budi came over distracted his brother and Puppe managed to move away. She seemed to cower away from him. And when the boys stopped rough housing Budi went and sat over Puppe while Kembali moved to the other side of the exhibit by himself. I'm wondering if puberty is hitting Kembali and he is taking a little of that angst out on Puppe. He might just be a little too rough for her at times given her age. If that behaviour is going on the zoo would look to at least give her a break. But I don't know for certain. That was just my observation from the last time.

Noticed the same thing...I asked a keeper...Kembali is bullying both Puppe & Budi. Puppe & Budi will still go out together. Kembali will be by himself.

If Kembali has begun to mature and is getting aggressive even with Budi I would think they will be asking the SSP to start looking for a new home for him where he can settle in with a female he can one day breed with. Males are a little more in demand so it probably wont be all that difficult to find him a home.

According to the Zoo facebook page the Lynx cubs have both been confirmed to be female. They're also 4 months old.

The zoo hosted a vulture awareness day this weekend... sadly the person writing the following article and attaching picture to it doesn't seem to know what a vulture is or how to ask people the right species or how to spell names. Purely posting for the giggles.

The Toronto Zoo celebrates vultures

Almost everyone was back at school today, so I decided to head to the zoo. Good thing I was right, as it wasn’t anywhere near as busy as it has been this summer.

Indian Rhino Vishnu was out on exhibit today.

Orangutan Puppe was on exhibit by herself today.

I have yet to see both male and female Red River Hogs with each other on exhibit. They usually alternate, with one being out on exhibit outdoors, while the other is indoors, off exhibit.

Pygmy Hippo Kindia is still by herself in the Pygmy Hippo exhibit. I usually find her enjoying the water. Harvey is kept in the indoor Red River Hog exhibit, where he is sometimes watching Kindia through the fencing in the door.

Noticed that Warthog Lucy was on exhibit by herself. Have her Piglets, who were around 2 years old, been sent away? Or are they in the process of being sent away, and have been separated from Lucy?

White Rhino Tony is still out with the girls.

While walking by the Zebra’s I saw a small film crew filming a Keeper, asking questions about Zebra calf Rey. Mother Tori has finally let Leia and Rey to get close to each other, allowing them to play with each other. Rey is a lot larger than Leia was at this age, which leaves Keepers to believe Rey will grow to be a large female when fully grown.

I went down to the Domain today, hoping to catch some of the animals in action. Kinda got lucky with the Lynx cubs, hopefully I’ll have a picture or 2 to post later. However, one thing I noticed is that in the former Musk Ox yard, across the Cougar exhibit are 4 fairly sizable Turkeys in the exhibit. Usually the only animals in there nowadays are the 2, I believe male, Bison. Anyone know anything about this? Why are there 4 Turkeys in the exhibit.

I have heard that the Red River Hogs liked each other until the zoo did work on the holding last winter and send them off to the Health Center. Upon returning they wouldn't get along. Pity we are wasting more time with hogs who will not breed.

Kindia is probably being given more time to settle in before introducing Harvey and then hopefully timing a pregnancy well. A six to seven month pregnancy would mean they would want them breeding around December to time a baby for June or July. They might try a little earlier in case it takes time to get them comfortable. They probably wont introduce until Kindia is cycling to increase the odds of them getting along. Maybe October or November.

I haven't heard anything about the warthog piglets leaving or any male coming in some time soon. But you are right the foursome are two and should be leaving soon.

You realize the turkeys you saw in the bison exhibit could potentially have just been random wild turkeys right? They might not even belong to the zoo... unless they had id bands.

A shame about the Red River Hogs. Piglets would be nice to see.

Same goes with the Pygmy Hippos. Let's wish for successful breeding when the time comes.
