Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Discussion thread 2022

Don't forget the possibility of a second Orang infant as the past week Ramai has been cycling and Budi and her have been seen mating by the keepers. So really keep an eye out for a Ramai pregnancy update possibly coming soon or within the next 2 months or so.

Fair @Akula but the discussion was about spring and summer excitement at the zoo. Ramai's baby at this point might not appear until the very end of the year, quite possibly next year.

Very exciting news! I know Budi and Ramai have been introduced several times in the last year or so but I wasn't sure if they had bred till now. I think I read a while back that in years past Budi was too afraid to breed with the very dominant Ramai so I'm very glad he's finally gotten the hang of it with her now that he's all grown up with the cheek pads!

@TZFan I’ll be at the Bronx Zoo today! First time since 2005! I’m just curious as to which animals have any connection to Toronto? I’m happy to look for them, photograph them, and to try and get any updates on them if possible. My goal for the day is to photograph every bird species on exhibit! Quite the contrast from the TZs collection!!

@animalman0341, enjoy your day firstly. I can only think of Indian rhino George who is Vishnu's baby brother though Vinu. Im certain there are more but thats the only one that comes to mind. You would have to check the family tree thread for more ideas. I dont know that we have any direct animal that has lived at both places still there.

Does anyone know what's being done in the unused outdoor Australian aviary? I know there was a FB live where they discussed using that space again. If we did ever get koalas, and if they had money, I would love if they just bulldozed that space and make it into an outdoor koala exhibit. But I would also be happy if they brought back lorikeet feeding. I vividly remember it being a lorikeet feeding aviary at some point!

@Flixox101, sadly that single Facebook Live is all the info we have had about the Australasia outdoor aviary. Sounded like the work was being done by zoo staff so its unlikely we will get a contract for work to look at. That one is probably just going to have to be a wait and see project. I would think if they were doing work in the fall the hope will be to open it back up come spring so probably wont be long to find out. I do think it will likely just a spot for outdoor access for the birds but even that would be a nice improvement.

Went to the zoo today. Here are some tidbits from my visit. Most are nothing of significance while others may be something of more interest.

The Arctic Wolf pack was really active. So that was nice to see. That exhibit is great for a large active pack, especially in the snow, where they really shine.

Managed to get a look at the new Tawny Frogmouth, Erkle. He looks smaller than old Makepeace, but that could be the angle I saw him from. Either way, the species is such an interesting looking bird.

While in the walkthrough aviary a saw at least 2 Scarlet-Chested Parrots flying around. Are these little guys new? I don’t remember seeing them before. I’ll try uploading a photo tomorrow.

Americas Pavilion was closed off.

I decided to check out the washrooms just to see how the renovations looks, plus nature called. So I checked out the washrooms at the African Restaurant (not the Simba Safari Lodge), and it was not the washrooms Dolf has been teasing on instagram, but they have been renovated. Nice clean renovation for sure. The washrooms that Dolf has been teasing are the ones at the top of the boardwalk from Indo-Malaya. That washroom is real nice. I’d say best washrooms at the zoo now.

Last point to note from my visit is that there is a lot of maintenance being done around the core woods, around the Sumatran Tiger exhibit, as well as in the entrance of Indo-Malaya. Lots of workers moving lots of shrubs and vegetation. I can't help and wonder if it's general maintenance or prep work on work to be done to the boardwalk.

@cypher I dont recall anyone mentioning Scarlet Crested Parrots before. Doesnt mean they havent been there for awhile and no one thought to mention. Interestingly I also dont remember the zoo mentioning them in the last few Facebook Lives from in there. Hopefully its a sign that they are looking to up their game in the aviary which has long been needed.

Thanks @TZFan. I though that was the case, but wasn't entirely sure. There was a volunteer in the pavilion that talked about them as if they were new when they were talking with other visitors. Never got the chance to confirm though.

If it must be done, then done it shall be, lol.

Now I only saw 2 of these birds, but they were quite active flying all over the aviary, so there could be more.

A couple years ago we had a few Scarlet-chested Parrots. They've been around since at least 2018, but I think we were down to just one male in the last couple years named Maverick. Great to hear we've got more again, it's been a little sad watching the number of species/individuals in the Australasia aviary dwindle over the last few years.

Ok, 2018 was around my lapse in visiting the zoo, so I would've missed them then. Hopefully this is to start what will hopefully be the reopening of the outdoor aviary of Australasia.

I have to agree with you @Kalvin. The Australasia aviary seems light on activity.

An unrelated fun story, but the zoo actually acquired their Scarlet chested parakeets from a friend of mine, along with a handful of their other birds as well.

Their most recent female Palawan Peacock pheasant, I believe their fire back pheasants, and I think their crested doves as well.

Cool. Your friend must have a cool collection to be able to contribute those 4 species. Thank them for letting us enjoy some of their birds please. Our coolest birds always seem to come from private collectors.
