OOO, This is very exciting. Panda's could open many doors for Toronto Zoo (research, a boost in attendance and maybe even adding some more cubs to the population :D)

But remember, we can't let this get to our heads as remember how many panda deals china has backed out of with other american zoos?

Keyword in your reply was AMERICAN. (No offense to those down south) but Canada has extreamly strong ties with China especially with research and development!

Hopefully this happens cause it would be an amazing oppritunity. Fingers Crossed!

Oh, that is a very good point but China won't even tell us the secret to AI on bactrican camels, so would they give us pandas?

Was just reading an article in the Toronto Star saying that if the zoo were to acquire Pandas, the Grizzly Bears, River Otters & Beavers would not be getting new exhibits and therefore leaving the zoo. But we will see what they say at their meeting on Oct 2.

Well, we know now why the keepers are not all for the pandas :p

Seriously though, this is a tough situation as although panda's would be greatly popular, the other three animals are also popular

I had always though the panda exhibit was slated to take over the current camel exhibit?

It is Zoogoer, and I haven't yet found the article about not having grizzly's etc.

EDIT!

Never mind I have found the article. They stte that they will most likely raise the money elsewhere to get the pandas if they are convinced to get pandas. It still isn't any guarantee that the Chinese government will have them in Toronto. Nor if the price is to high then they will cancel the deal. However lets hope everything works out. I would like to see pandas but also have Canadian species as well.

Wouldn't the zoo get more money from people seeing the pandas? I do like the idea of them raising money elsewhere to get the pandas. Maybe have a adopt-a-panda scheme for companies, private citizens where money can help with the upkeep of them too.

Yay! Thanks for posting this! Couldn't this have been done via the web? Like a webcast sort of thing? Less money and less traveling :p It'd be neat too if it was made public, sort of a behind the scenes look.

I think the trip shows a kind of respect, but I think 9 people is way too much!

Well, well, well.... I think I got my wish.

The board trimed the amount of people going to China to 4. The Calgary Zoo has also taken an interest into the Giant Panda achivement. There is also a nice picture from the pandas that used to be in Toronto in 1985! The price tag went from 63,000 to 28,000! All the best luck to the Toronto Zoo! However I haven't heard anything about the Canadian animals?

TheStar.com | GTA | $28,000 panda trip gets okay from zoo

The second article: Claims that; "Peter Evans, acting CEO of the zoo, said China committed to providing Toronto with a pair of pandas in a 2003 letter he provided yesterday." I guess that would be a strong tie?

It even says that the zoo may share the pandas with the Calgary Zoo in order to split the costs.

In other articles it has been said that this will help boost fundraising to build the rest of the Canadian Wilderness!

MUCH more reasonable pricetag, though I think my webcast idea is still better :P I'm surprised Toronto Inhumane Society's not whining about it.

Better price tag, i just hope we get the pandas AND get to build the Canadian Wilderness!

Just a question... Does anyone know how the arctic fox exhibit is coming along?Im hoping they open it before winter

Great thing you ask Zoogoer! I have been wanting to know as well. I am going to the zoo on Sunday the 16, I will find out for sure then if no one answers before.

Good find Ungulate, and they make some good points

It does seem a bit commercialist, but having giant pandas would give the zoo so many research oppurtunities

And if the zoo had a panda cub, that would open even more doors

Still, we have to look at the fact that we might have to sacrifice some canadian species as well as alot of money
