Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2012

There is quite a few questions here and some of which I can answer but some I might need some help with...

Eurasia:
To begin, the project was supposed to start construction on May 1st however, as some of you might have noticed, that has not been the case. Demo is to begin some time in June, but thats just demo as for the construction of new exhibits all I know of for sure is that the pandas will be put into the amur tiger exhibit with renos, the snow leopards are getting a new exhibit and we will see new exhibits/additions of stellers sea eagles and eurasian eagle owls. The specific buildings are mentioned to the demod include ones listed in this document http://www.torontozoo.com/pdfs/rfp/12-1187-00126- DSS Letter.pdf
They include the oryx, mouflon, amur tiger and two marco polo buildings. The mouflon have been moved to another holding on zoo grounds.

Animals to stay are as follows: (WITH CANADIAN WILDERNESS COMPLETION)
Bactrian camel, Domestic Yak, Przewalski's horse, Snow leopard, Dromedary camel (are seen every now and then as they are camel rides camels and not owned by Toronto), Mouflon, red panda

There will be a new zoomobile route that will cut across Eurasia just past the old wisent exhibit and run in front of the barbary apes, dholes and snow leopards that is supposed to have opened up May 1st as well but we are still waiting for that project to begin. There will also be drive through animal exhibits with the horses, mouflon to be moved to the Oryx's old exhibit and yaks. NOTE: this route is temporary as these animals will be moved to make way for the Canadian Wilderness when that project starts. (includes the snow leopard (which will be moved to a new exhibit), barbary apes, and dholes.

Unsure:
Asiatic wild dog, Barbary ape, Barbary sheep, Chamois, West Caucasian Tur
Reindeer moved to Tundra

If this is confusing let me know and I will try and state it more clearly.

Hippos: we have 3 hippos at the zoo 1 male and 2 females. The two females Petal and Perky you probably see on exhibit when you are at the zoo, the only male Samson is by himself, they do alternate on exhibit usually you will see Samson in the morning and the girls in the afternoon. They are separated because they are siblings.

Cheetahs: from what I have heard, they have been pairing some cheetahs up so lets hope for the best :D

Hudson: put it this way he does not look like a stuffed teddy bear anymore he is growing fast and looks like a miniature polar bear now!

Quartz , thanks for the update.

The species make-over does not look that interesting though (yak, camel, dromedary), while unsure for example for chamois and / or tur.

im wondering if they exclude the dholes from the new plans, if they would go to the wilds until 2014 and then go to the columbus zoo and be put into the old lion exhibit in asia quest.

It is not 100% sure that the zoo will phase out the dholes so I would not jump to conclusions just yet, I know for sure they will be on exhibit for at least another 18 months.

If our dholes were to leave, I would think the most sensible place for them to move to would be Minnesota Zoo rather than The Wilds. Minnesota's dholes are not related to our animals, which would create higher genetic diversity/more breeding options should that be recommended for our breeding aged female "Cassia" (Who's siblings reside both at The Wilds and SDZ)

Also, do remember that our two other remaining females are growing quite old (Atleast 11 or 12 years old) so they may not even be alive by the time the decision is made about future management of the dholes at TZ. If Cassia was left as a lone animal in the collection, I would suspect that TZ would send her out to another institution rather than shipping in new animals from overseas

In the long run, I think TZ has seen its day with the dholes, and I personally believe that era is coming to an end

So is demo suppose to be starting now for the Eurasia section and is scheduled to be done by next year for the pandas? Or is that JUST the panda enclosure?

From what I understand ALL of Eurasia will be completed by May of next year!

Looks good! You can now see how everything is going to flow together.

Very nice! I know it's just plans but that is a nice looking Snow Leopard exhibit. I'm curious as to what a new cougar exhibit would look.

The exhibit looks great! I'm not that sure looking at the plans, but is it one big enclosure or are there two separate yards?

Its one large exhibit with holdings in the building it looks like they have two holding yards as well.

The Marco Polo buildings were being demolished this morning and the fencing has been taken down surrounding the old oryx exhibit.

The zoomobile is now using its new route, passing by the snow leopards, barbary apes and dholes.

A new ropes climbing course is being constructed next to the outdoor gorilla exhibit. The zoo is using this time to replace the mesh on the outdoor gorilla exhibit.

The Gorilla Climb (ropes course) opens up tomorrow!

Video Interview with Michelle Berardinetti and Grant Ankeman

Opinions?

I just have to say I do feel extremely sorry for Grant as he was pressured by zoo CEO to keep his responses to his personal opinion so he was stuck when answering certain questions and you can see that in his responses.

shocking news out of the TZ today ... babies means more visitors! WOW! Next headline ... the sky is blue.
