Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2012

Visitors to the TZ was up 46% in the first six months of 2012 and the TZ attributed it to Hudson, the baby penguins, baby lemur and white lions. My sarcasm comes from my frustration that the TZ has in the past inadequately advertised its successes. One example of many I could give, the TZ did not advertise the birth of the snow leopards or announce when they'd be on exhibit. Since the TZ needs money why they wouldn't advertise their births and let everyone know when they can see them on exhibit is beyond me! So while I'm thrilled that the TZ has finally realized that advertising their successes works to get people to the TZ, I only wish they'd realized it earlier.

I completely agree with you kknudsen. They have done a terrible job in the past of advertising their successes. Even with the improvements their cute alert page needs more updating. Each birth should be posted once the baby is on display. And they could afford to take a page out of San Diego Zoo's book and post blogs for us to read and post about the babies. It would help get people more interested in their animals and interested people are more likely to visit. Another great baby addition would be web cams for significant animal births. Tons of people would be watching Hudson all the time if given the chance. Im glad the zoo is improving its self advertising but clearly more can and should be done. Im all for a panda cam next spring.

I agree with both of you! Webcams however are expensive to runs, and the zoo, again, does not have a webmaster, I think this is number 4?

I dont know about the cost of purchasing the webcams and running them but it would be interesting to find out how just having webcams has affected other zoos attendance. I think we just have to be happy though that they started promoting their sucesses and they arent just telling us about the whole messy elephant situation and major animal deaths. The last few years it seemed all their press releases were about animals dying which only made the zoo seem horrible, when it was mostly due to simple old age. Hopefully they will keep on this more positive path. I hope their next big campagin after the cute fights is a naming constest for the white lions. they need names and look how much we enjoyed naming Hudson.

There is a naming contest that will be open to the public starting sometime next week. It will involve several animals, including the white lions.

Hey thats great to hear. Thanks for the info adams7. Naming contests are always fun to participate in.

How big of a herd of Przewalski's horses does the zoo have? I always thought the herd wasn't that large, do they really need 4 yards for themselves? Am I just missing something there, or does anyone else think it to be weird that they are being given so much space?

Those plans are a bit misleading from what I know, the yaks, mouflons and horses will be in those exhibits. Which leaves an extra exhibit for extra space.

On a side note, all of these plans keep saying sika deer, will this be made a reality? There is over 100 at African Lion Safari so it is possible. What also confuses me is the tahr will they be moved? The reason why I am questioning this is because it also says habitat for where the chamois are located.

Now I guess I'm going to have to go for one last visit to see the girls. Also, the Eurasia species list is shaping up to be a pretty impressive one. If I'm not mistaken it looks like this:

Giant Panda
Snow Leopard
Red Panda
Bactrian Camel
Przewalski's Horse
Tibetan Yak
Sika Deer
Himalayan Tahr
Mouflon
Eurasian Eagle Owl
& Steller's Sea Eagle

Hopefully the zoo keeps the dholes in the collection as well!

Do you know if the zoo will have the elephants on exhibit untill the second or will they be off exhibit to prepare for there trip south?

are we still keeping Barbary ape at the eurasia reno?

No, barbary ape are a phase-out species for the zoo. Once demolition begins to occur on their exhibit (as other exhibits will sit on its current place), I would guess the remaining specimens will live out their days in the Animal Health Centre or would maybe even be shipped to a zoo overseas.

The apes will stay on display via zoomobile as will the dholes until construction on the Canadian Wilderness begins (2-3 years, probably). However, these two, Sika Deer and Himalayan Tahr as sceptical. There is no solid proof other then being stating on the plans that they will be coming, I mean it has not been mentioned outside of what was stating on the plans whereas the rest of them have been.

I really don't even understand why the tahr are getting a new exhibit. They have a perfectly fine one that can be seen from the zoomobile, they aren't terribly iconic and it takes up space that could be used to house other species that may be leaving our collection (specifically the dholes). While there is always more included (money, feasibility, etc.), I just really don't think this makes an awful lot of sense.

Thankful the girls are staying for awhile longer, what is happening with the Turs? Haven't seen anything about them, or maybe I missed it. Thanks.

I wonder what will replace the elephants? My best guess would be dromedary camels because that is what ends up replacing most elephants.
