Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Future Developments 2013

Has anyone read the comments yet below that post? How could anyone possibly think that people with these sorts of views could be of ANY benefit to the governing of a zoo? I feel sorry for the people at the Toronto Zoo who are actually educated, and now will have to deal with the soon to be (no doubt) ridiculous claims this committee will be making about the quality of the zoo. I don't understand why this is considered a smart move, let the zoo and the people of high education govern itself. Take a look at this comment that was made by someone: "I won't be happy until all the zoos are closed. I am also not happy about the opening of the new Ripley's Aquarium place in Toronto including that they have rare species. Have we not learned from our mistakes with the wonderful Marine Land? Shut them all down." This is the view-point of many people who support ZooCheck, what these people do not realize is the amount of true conservation work and research that zoos actually do.

It is sad, that the city council is so quick to cave into a little bit of pressure from someone who can talk so loudly.....Why not have someone focus on the benefits of zoos for one hour, there are hundreds! The same story over and over again with the same reasons as to why zoos are horrible is getting old.

Sorry for the rant! It just bothers me someday's when people try to talk about things when they start off being biased and never take a moment to really observe the benefits of both sides.

A lot of people that commented on that facebook page seem to hate zoos. I could care less about their opinions.

Just read in the board meeting the ziplines been approved. The contract is for 2014 through 2018 so look for it next summer.

So is this zip line a limited time thing?

And any idea where the zip line will go over?

I'm guessing that the zip line will be at the from 2014 to 2018 like TZFan said, but if it's popular, it might stay for longer.

The zip line will go over Tundra Trek, in between the wolves and foxes. It will start by the Caribou Cafe and end close to the Mayan Temple.

The zip line seems like a good idea that I would actually like to try at least once. It sounds like it'll be much more fun than the Gorilla Ropes Course.

Yeah, I'm lucky enough to live close by to the zoo. I'm going tomorrow with my brother, and chances are I'll be going again on the weekend. We love to work on our Photography there.

I've never been part of members appreciation month. Sounds pretty exciting. Can't wait to see what awaits.

If you two could get any pics of the behind the scenes stuff that would be amazing!

My pictures

When I go for the Behind the scenes this weekend (hopefully) I'll try getting some pictures to post in the gallery.

As for my regular pictures I usually post them on flickr. Check them out. Over 100 of my pictures are at the Toronto Zoo.

I know from zoo camp that the zoo doesn't allow people to take pictures behind the scenes. When I go, I'll try to take pictures of the baby giraffe and the salamander. I doubt the zoo will let me take behind the scenes pictures.

Cypher: you took some amazing pictures! why don't you post more in the Toronto Zoo gallery. I know that me and TZFan would enjoy looking at them.

Thanks arcticwolf. I'd like to post my pictures here, but if I do that, I would share my rights to the picture with Hampel Group, who owns this site. I plan on possibly selling prints of my pictures in the future, and I'd like to keep all the rights to my pictures. Common pictures I have no intention on making prints of, well, I'll look into possibly posting those in the Gallery.

As for my visit to the zoo today, I think I'm starting to see the construction in Eurasia paying off. When leaving the Panda exhibit, passed the Mandarin, in the distance I was able to see 2 separate man made mountain structures. I'm guessing for the West Caucasian Tur and/or Barbary sheep. I don't remember seeing these mountains structures in my last couple visits.

Cypher you are an extremely talented photographer! I'm lucky to get one photo I kind of like out of hundreds. Oh to have a tenth of your or Arcticwolfs talents.

I forgot about the salamander and more importantly the giraffe calf and baby kudu. Yes I would love those photos please.

I don't think my photography comes even close to Cypher's! Every once in a while I get a good photo, but it involves no skill. I just get lucky.

I'm interested about the new mountains in Eurasia. Are they the same mountains as the ones in Eurasia before it closed or completely new structures? I also wonder what species will live on them. I'm guessing one of the mountain goat/sheep species and maybe snow leopard? Or two goat/sheep species and snow leopards in a different exhibit? I can't wait to find out.

Thanks TZFan. It's much appreciated.

I forgot about the baby Kudu. When was it born, cause I'm pretty sure I got pictures of it running around the field as the adult Kudu grazed. I'll try posting a couple photos in the gallery.

I dont know when the kudu was born for certain but I think I first heard about it in early October maybe late September.

The pandas are proving popular and profitable. Big shocker right?

In other news from the zoo board meeting they have visitor survey stats. Sadly people are 98% happy with the website... clearly none of us were surveyed.

And for anyone interested in wading through the zoo's reports on their contributions to endangered species programs around the world heres the link.

I can't believe how many people like the website. I wish the zoo could at least update it to show current news, animals, and babies.
