Yes, I heard from earlier post/ updates that the Wisent and the Musk Ox were gone. Very sad, as the musk ox especially was one of my favourites.

Wow, that is a list, sad to hear that those species will be phased out.

You said Lions are phasing out, does that mean a new pride would be brought in?

Yes a new pride of lions is going to be brought in. Possibly white lions. It is very sad to sea Musk Ox go they are one of my fav's as well. However, the Calgary Zoo has a very impressive herd!

Thanks for the head's up on the porcupine situation :)

I think Barbary Apes are on the phase out list as well, along with Spotted Hyenas.

The Hyenas eh? Thats sad, very interesting creatures.

Any word on what is replacing them? Are they bringing in new Hyenas?

Thanks.

You're very welcome! I'll sure miss the hyenas, one of my favorite species, but I can see why they'd be bringing in African Wild Dogs instead due to their endangered species status and more zoos having them, which should help with breeding programs. Though, it'd be cool to have both species!

Which is one reason why TZ is considered a world class zoo!

Welcome JMAN, great to have another TZ fan onboard!

Another species that I think we are phasing out are Himalayan Tahr (The AZA is phasing them out of all NA Zoo's as far as I know)

Actually I am not so sure about the impala but I do know we continue to breed elk, and tahr. I personally don't think that elk will be phased out of our zoo for anytime soon.

As for new arrivals a male Greater Kudu arrived yesterday and a male ostrich was due to come in today!

Hi everyone;

I was at the zoo today and there was a new frog exhibit in the America's Pavillion.

The Waxy Monkey Frog is new on exhibit and is located in the old painted turtle exhibit beside the Axotol (sp?) exhibit. Frog looks really neat and seems to be able to camoflage very well.

Yea that is a newer exhibit. Beside the Axolotl. It was the old spotted turtle exhibit actually.

RIP, Tara :( My most sincerest condolences go to the staff and remainder of the herd. No doubt Toronto Inhumane Society will make a fuss out of it, even if they are in no position to

An elephant at the Toronto Zoo died this morning after zoo staff found her lying down, unable to stand up.

Tara, the 41-year-old "matriarch" of the elephant herd, had not exhibited any recent health concerns, Gary Coles, supervisor of the zoo's African Savanna, said. She was found by animal care staff shortly before 8 a.m. Monday morning, who tried in vain to lift the 8,500-pound animal back onto her feet. They were unable to hoist her back up, and she died at 11 a.m.

Tara was out in public as recently as last weekend, Cole said, and appeared to be doing well. "She was in good form, chasing the others and being her usual bossy self," he said. "She wasn't lethargic; she was eating."

The zoo will conduct a post-mortem examination with the assistance of the Ontario Veterinary College to determine Tara's exact cause of death. According to the zoo, the average lifespan of an elephant is between 40 and 45 years.

Another elephant, Tessa, died at Toronto Zoo five months ago after being pushed over by another elephant. However, Cole ruled that out as a possibility in this case, saying Tara was alone in her pen at the time.

Tara has lived at Toronto Zoo since 1974, arriving from southern Africa shortly after the zoo opened, and as many as 50 million people have visited Tara since. According to Cole, she had been "the boss" of the elephant herd for the past four years since the death of Patsy, the herd's previous matriarch.

"If there was a disagreement between other elephants, she would break it up," Cole said. "She liked to be the one in control. She'd go over and just by getting close to whoever she was going to interact with, they'd run away. Sometimes she'd throw her trunk at them. She didn't have to do much."

Toka, a 40-year-old elephant, is the new matriarch of the three remaining elephants, Cole said. Iringa, 40 and Thika, 30, round out the herd.

Cole acknowledged that the three remaining elephants are older, saying that "whenever we lose an elephant, we have to reassess how the loss will affect the dynamic of the group." He said that the zoo will examine its options after the grieving period.

Toka, Iringa and Thika were given time alone with Tara's body Monday morning to mourn their loss.

"They were out for three hours with her, and were just kind of standing around her," Cole said.

A number of the zoo's elephant keepers came in on their days off to say goodbye as well. "The elephants really get you," Cole said. "The staff are all devastated."

:( That's so sad...RIP Tara~ my sincerest condolences to Ungulate/the other keepers @ the zoo (and Meaghan if THS gives the zoo any grief about this we'll just throw back the pictures the investigators took of the conditions back in their faces; I'd be really surprised if they tried anything now)

I had a feeling when I was getting onto Zoochat that something big happened at TZ, but this really is quite a sad blow

Ungulate and all the other keepers, I give my condolences... very sorry

R.I.P Tara :(

R.I.P Tara, it was a devistating morning! The AHC was very quite today!
