I saw the Babirusa's too yesterday! One Gibbon had already been moved back to the holding at that point and the other was on the opposite side of the exhibit intentively watching the babirusa's every move. lol.

no we have 1.1 a male named Kilat and female named Loka.

A few updates. Firstly, and sadly, the female Tapir the zoo received passed away due to internal organ problems. The zoo also has another babirusa in quarantine, as well as a tiger(unknown species), a male moose, and a komodo dragon.

On another note, the gibbons were seen smacking and riding on the back of the babirusa in their exhibit.

The male tiger is most likely a sumatran tiger called "Harimau Kayu" who came from the San Diego Wild Animal Park to be Brytne's new mate

Also I believe the new komodo is a female, to be paired with our current male "Kilat" (Fun fact, Kilat was actually born at TZ back in 2004 when we had our first and only komodo dragon eggs hatch)

I noticed the two most recent comments to this thread mentioning the possibility of the male Sumatran tiger in quarantine, so my curiosity and excitement just wants to confirm this.

Can anybody confirm for sure that it is, in fact, the male Sumatran Tiger that has arrived from San Diego Zoo?

When Toronto Zoo receives a big cat from another zoo, how long does it typically remain in quarantine for? After quarantine, how long is the process of introducing the two breeding partners together?

I hope that everything goes perfectly well and that Brytne and this new male will be able to have a healthy litter or two while she is still able to conceive and raise her cubs.

Very saddened for the unexpected death of the female tapir imported.
What is the state of things and plan now re Malayans?

So sorry to hear of the tapir's passing :( Not sure about the introductory process length, I think it depends on the individual cats. But I believe quarentine's usually 30 days.

Fingers crossed for another succesful Brytne litter! I loved the webcams that she had when she had litters. She was such a good mama.

The new tiger in quarantine is indeed a sumatran tiger and yes he did come from San Diego as zoogoer stated.

Komodo is female, named Kiki.

A mammal quarantine usually takes 60 days possibly 30? I may be mistaken each group of animals is different, I will see if I can find out the actual information. Reptiles and Amphibians is 30 days.

The process of introducing animals to one and other is as long as it takes for them to basically not fight which each other.

The malyan tapir death is sad however I am sure the zoo will look for another female. I know there was debate with bringing in a female but clearly it went through so I think plans will be in place for another female.

Other interesting news, Ashakirans father Henry died recently at the Buffalo Zoo and Clover which is another Indian rhino sired by him is moving to African Lion Safari this summer!

The male Sumatran tiger from San Diego Zoo is now on display. The female, Brytne, was pacing back and forth showing some interest in his scent. They are still in separate enclosures until they get accustomed to each other's presence, I assume.

Some updates about the zoo:

- Nokanda was euthanized last week due to liver cancer
- There was a komodo dragon death, I have heard is was the one in quarantine but this needs to be double checked?
- Indian Rhinos were introduced for breeding today, and WOW is the mating of two rhinos aggressive and very interesting! If you wanted to know how to tell the rhinos apart, Asha has a smoothed horn, whereas Vishnu has a pointed one

What species Nokanda?

As to rhinos: their mating game and chase is indeed a classic. Trigger is always the cow on heat. If not, no introduction makes any sense. Asha is still young, so no problem she lost her first calf. She will be mated successfully again and expect another calf due somewhere in late 2012.

RIP Komodo Dragon and Nokonda, you were my favorite cat, tied also with the deceased Tonghua. Nokonda was the white lioness.

Seeing the rhino display must have really been something!

Perhaps, like Chester this thread needs to be wrapped up and started a fresh?
