Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo New Animals, Departures and Deaths 2012

I've been looking at the AZA studbooks/breeding plans and i have some news.

The 2011 Red River Hog book says we are or did transfer Sabrina, Simon and Dwight to Shaddow Nursery Inc in Tennesse. We are or did get a now 2 year old female named Casey from Cinicinnati and a now 1 year old nameless male from Oaklahoma. The new hogs are future breeders. Has this happened?

The 2011 Warthog book says we are or did receive a new female Lucy from Atlanta to breed with Stephan as priority breeders. Back up breeders are Jimmy, Dean or Schneider.

So maybe some new piglets on the way for next summer.

I also looked up the Hippos and it says Samson, Petal and Perky's parentage is unknown or partially unknown. If they are siblings born at the zoo shouldnt we know exactly who their parents were? And if their parents are the original hippos brought in from the wild when the zoo was formed shouldnt their genetics be valuable? I know we cant breed them because they are siblings but wouldnt other zoos have wanted them before they got too old to breed. Or at least we could have shipped out Samson to make room for a new unrelated male and bred. I'd be interested to know more about our hippos past.

Will be nice to have some hog (both species) litters again. Haven't had any since 2007!

Thats what I thought when I read that stuff. But like I said Im not really sure that everything happened. Im not a zoo member and I dont get the collections magazine so I cant look back over the last year's issues to see if the new hogs arrived.

The new red river hogs have been on display since mid-May, as have the Lucy and Stephan, the warthogs.

Cool, thanks adams7 for the confirmation. I wasnt sure whether the moves were just recommended and ignored or delayed or if it all happened. Maybe next spring we will have another cute fight on our hands. Im probably going to go with red river hog piglets.

With the white lions on display, what happened to Lindy and Jerroh?

We're did they go?

I remember visiting days before the white lions went on display... Lindy and jerroh seemed very anxious, we wondered if they could sense the presence of the whites nearby...

Lindy and Jerroh go on exhibit after the zoo closes or they let them out towards closing I believe. The white lions are considered one of the highlights of the zoo, so the zoo chooses to keep the white lions out on exhibit the majority of the day.

Does anyone know how the pygmy hippo calf is doing? I hope she is doing well into the medical centre's expert care.

Im glad they will get a chance to reverse things. I dont want to get into the whole PAWS issue but I just hope they decide to back out of the decision making and let those who love those elephants the most and have cared for them since they arrived to make the call about where to send our girls. They are the best suited to make the most informed decision not a bunch of elected relativley uninformed citizens who think they know better then experts. I just hope the girls go to the best home for them wherever that may be.

Indeed, so it is (and would be just and correct). :)

Then they may go to an AZA institution with a non-breeding all female group. Should be good watching them down south in a nice exhibit!

Question about Tigers:

When I was there last week, I heard a staff member say that the Sumatran Tiger will be getting a breeding female soon (possibly in quarantine?) -- anyone know what's happening? (I'm still sore over Brytne... I can't see this working out well after that tragedy. :( )

And also that the Amur Tigers are being sent somewhere else. Right now they're in the outdoor Indo-Malaya exhibit. But supposedly they're going soon and will be gone for the duration of the Panda exhibit... I know the plan was to put them Indo-Malaya while Eurasia is under construction, but I haven't heard anything about losing the Amur tigers completely.

There is only one Amur tiger that was brought in for breeding. He will be going somewhere else to do this since our female passed away.

I imagine this pairing may go better than Harimau/Brytne. Although the result was deadly on Brytne's end, we have to remember several things. This was Hari's first time with another female (apart from his family), and when the fight occured, it probably was more of an extreme fight than a malicious attack on Hari's part. Things always have the possibility of going sour when introducing animals (especially large carnivores), and I think this was just a fluke, heated incident where things just didn't end well.

The remaining Amur tiger was supposed to have left in the summer. The current plan is that Amur tigers will return after the Pandas have left.

In other news, Inukshuk has been loaned to Cochrane Polar Habitat. He left the zoo late on Sept 30.

There have also been a few 'popular' animal deaths recently, but the zoo has not yet released the details, so I will hold off for a week or two.

I wonder why we moved Inukshuk. I know Hudsons going to need to be in the regular exhibits soon because of his size so room might have been needed for him. However one would think they built the housing with enough room for more then 3 adult or sub adult bears. But I also wonder if they think one or both of the girls are expecting. That could explain the need to move the big guy. Having Nikita, Aurora, Hudson and cubbies could push the numbers to the max.

I would imagine atleast one of the girls are expecting, so for capacity/management reasons, it's probably best if he moved out for a little while.

I've been thinking and I wonder why it isnt Hudson whos sent away. I know hes hugely popular and if there arent any cubbies this year he will continue to draw his fans but if there arent cubs Inukshuk is kind of necessary to getting more. Also if only one of our ladies is expecting couldnt Inukshuk keep the other company. Hudson probably shouldnt go on exhibit with them until his full or almost full grown and by then you dont want any accidental cubs so he shouldnt be kept with his mother or aunt. Keeping the big guy makes more sense to me unless he doesnt get along with the ladies except during breeding season and they are certain cubs are on the way. Not that I want any of them to go. Just a thought that occured to me and I thought I would put out there and see what others thought. I do like Inukshuk, I remember seeing him and the girls for that matter as little cubs. But at least if he has to go hes going back to a farmilar place where he was happy and comfortable before his return to Toronto.
