Just something fun for everyone to know:

My buddy who went with me to the zoo on sunday is a photographer and in one of his pictures, of the Outdoor Marsupial Exhibit in Australasia, actor Michael Cera (Superbad, Year One) was in the small crowd watching the Wombat.

not really a zoo topic per-say, but interesting none the less

Thats actually pretty cool:)

Hey Guys;

I was just going through some newspaper articles for a project (Politics Major..fun lol) and came across an article back in January that involved the Toronto Zoo:

"TORONTO - A venomous snake pulled from an east-end apartment is resting safely in the Toronto Zoo, much to the relief of some surprised neighbours.

Toronto Police found the deadly East African gaboon viper, named Gabby, inside a Queen St. E. apartment near Greenwood Ave., with a cache of four other snakes on Thursday.

Const. Tony Vella said officers had been called to the building for a noise complaint when they found the 1.2-metre-long viper. Zoo staff were brought in to remove the snake and it is now in quarantine.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid."

Just wondering if any of you guys knew what is going to be done with the snake? Shipped away? Put on display?

Actually the zoo has been trying to acquire gaboon viper's for years so I think they may be keeping it

I think it'd make a great new exhibit animal for the African pavillion :) Likely it would lead a better life there than where she was before.

Oooh, another great update! From the website:

The Primate Wing Exhibit in the Americas Pavilion is closed effective Tuesday, 2010-04-13 for renovation. Animals off exhibit include: grey winged trumpeters, sloths, saki monkeys, pygmy marmosets, golden lion tamarins, common marmosets.

Does anybody have any up-to-date info on the Sumatran tigers?
Are they breeding them again?

I was there the other day and they are completely renovating the Sumatran tiger enclosure on the north side of the board walk. One of the keepers confirmed that the two younger Sumatran tigers will be leaving the zoo soon. So this will mean an empty Sumatran tiger enclosure on one side and I'm also wondering what all they are doing with the renovations. So all of this makes me wonder if they are breeding the pair again or if maybe she is already pregnant. I sure hope that they do breed again before they get too old. I would love to see some more Sumatran tiger cubs.

I think they're trading them in for another breeding pair and retiring the old pair, but could be wrong. I'm glad their enclosure's being renovated! I think it's remained the same way since the 70's back when they had Bengals.

I don't suppose since they are turning their attention to the that area that we will finally see the return of the octopus?

What ever happened with him anyways?

Kali and Indah (the sumatran tiger cubs from 2006) are moving to Japan sometime soon.

There parent's (Brytne and Rengat) are as far as I know allowed to breed again anytime after the younger two ship-out

The reason breeding for another litter has been delayed for this long is due to the fact that there would not be enough holding space to support Rengat, Kali & Indah and Brytne with young cubs

Also, the older exhibit recieved a renovation back in 2003 (Sponsored by AGF) including the removal of alot of hotwire surrounding the trees in the back (Which means more space for the tigers to live)

In regards to the octopus, the marine room in the Americas underwent renovations a very long time ago and since then has not re opened. This still remains a mystery why!?

I noticed on the Animals Off Display Board that they have the Anemonae, The Bat Star and the Giant Octopus on it....i take it from that these marine animals are still there, just off display.

I don't see the sea star, etc but the primate wing is undergoing construction so maybe a couple months.

We do not have any octopus at the zoo, well to my knowledge from January.

Maybe other have more info.

And by the way, you may want to check this out!

Oh, now I remember those tiger exhibit fixups :) I think the marine displays will reopen once the renos to the marmosets, etc. are done.

That carousel looks interesting!

You may be right Meaghan, I do know that the zoo plans on bringing back the stingrays in the America's pavilion, that may have something to do with it?

Yes they did, where the current amphibian window display area is. If you looked through the holes in the ways you used to be able to see it.

Coyote Jack's has been the restaurant at America's restaurant for a bit now. It is a restaurant owned by a company that caters to University Cafeterias. I have a Coyote Jack's at my University and its pretty good.
