Toronto Zoo Toronto Zoo Subforum

Meaghan,
I believe the photo you linked to is looking into the new part of the polar bear exhibit, with the wolf exhibit being in the foreground, off to the left. They have just begun pouring the foundations for the new polar bear house at the back of the exhibit, and the perimeter wall for it looks to be complete.

Unfortunately, the scan that Quartz posted is not the current plan - they have had to scale back a fair bit due to budget cuts. As I said earlier, the musk oxen are being phased out of the zoo's collection (fencing for these guys is pricey). The reindeer area has also been scaled back, and the temple, for now, is not being touched. I am not sure, either, of the status of the small exhibits, although I do know that a snowy owl recently went on exhibit at the entrance to the Americas Pavilion.

The larger of the two Dall's sheep mountains is still present, but I'm not sure whether it will be in the wolf exhibit or outside of it. As Quartz said, the wolf enclosure will be between the existing (old) bear exhibit and the Americas Restaurant, in the space that was formerly taken up by the waterway.

Great review Quartz :)

Ungulate - I was wondering if you could tell us the names of the Red River Hogs that are currently there? Thank you!

I think the red river hog pair is still Simon and Sabrina. They arrived summer 2005 from San Diego and have had piglets in 2006 and 2007.I don't know about 2008 though?I don't know the status but i think they still rotated on and off exhibit in the indoor forest area and the forest edge outdoor yard with the warthogs but i m unsure about the whole placement arrangement now?

So, theres not going to be a new Musk Ox exhibit? I have herd the zoo is having difficulty rasing funds for the $250 million they need. If I had money I would help them, but I don't. It really sucks that the zoo is scaling back, this means all of the exhibits promised may never happen. Although, I have also herd, this may not be true but from people who work for the Toronto Zoo Foundation, that the Panda exhibit will be the first project of Eurasia. So, I do think they are aiming for those animals a lot.

Does anyone know the status of the capybara?I haven't seen them in years and theres not even a sign at there space. Are they coming back and if not, what will go in there place?

All I know is they are not at the zoo, they were shipped out due to the Tundra, I really don't know.

I heard that capybara's are skittish animals so maybe they did it because of the noise from tundra contructuion. Its just a guess but maybe?

It may be, I really hope the zoo gets over there difficulties right now, with the fundraising and the pressure to Calvin White and Raymond Cho. have you read about this controversy lately?

pressure? Are you talking about the reindeer thing, getting pandas,or what ever else is happening. What controversy?

I know there really laid back but what i meant was this.I don't know if you've been to toronto zoo but there is an Americas Section with a pavilon and then a sub area called Mayan Temple Ruins and South American Waterfall. The capybara live in right next to the construction and if it got to loud then they could freak out.I know there is a large noise from the waterfall but i think they're probably used to it by now since they've lived there since about 1993.I know what you mean by laid back though.I heard one of the jaguars rasping over in the other yard which they could most likely here and they just sat there like jaguars are theree best friend. As for the controversy thing, does this mean the zoo is closing or what?

muntjac mystery?

I've been wondering for a while where the muntjac actually live.I've seen them in two places.i first saw them with the indian rhinos. Then i saw none there but the exact amount in the gaur paddock. Then the last few times i haven't seen any in either place or anywhere else.Whats the deal?

No, the zoo is not closing, but people feel that Calvin White and Paymond Cho should resign, they are just having difficulties finding out how to raise the campaign. After all, I do not see the Toronto Zoo, one of Toronto's premier attractions and the third largest zoo in the world closing in the next 200 years!

I haven't seen any around either

Ok,thank god, being only 12.I really did'nt understand the article and when it said the project of 34 years may be closing up,i thought "wait a sec,TZ IS 34 THIS YEAR...OH MY GOD,ITS GONNA CLOSE!!!".As for Calvin White,it would be cool for me since we have something in common for him to stay but he has been there a long time and it could use a change.

As for the muntjac,I understand there really good at hiding,i was just wondering if they did leave or what enclosure they live in

Don't worry. I had to read it over a couple of times and I still don't think i got it. lol

Oh,another thing that is so hard to understand is the operating budget and the capitla plan. They use so much adult lingo

Agreed. but there not trying to impress kids that snoop lol ;)
