Tulsa Zoo Tulsa Zoo News

The zoo has recently been teasing that the new Elephant Preserve Barn and Yard would be opening any week now. We went to the zoo today and it just so happened that the exhibit was open for the public! I uploaded lots of photos of the new facility from our visit today in the media section of the forum. The portion of the exhibit that is now complete is the 36,650-square-foot barn, indoor and outdoor guest viewing areas, and the new yard. This is just phase 1 of 3 for the Tulsa Zoo elephants. We noticed today that the old Elephant area is now fenced off and has started to receive extensive renovations. This comes in addition to the 10 acre Preserve Yard that is also under construction. This area will allow the elephants to roam freely in a natural space just behind the new facility. When it's all said and done the completed facility will be capable of holding muti-generational herds. The entire facility was very impressive and in my opinion puts Tulsa Zoo at the forefront of Asian Elephant care.

Am I the only one who finds it funny that the zoo casually opened a multi-million dollar elephant complex without any formal announcement or fanfare? That feels like something worth advertising. :p

Bet you all didn't see that one coming!

The zoo posted a fly-through video of African Wilds a few months ago but it wasn't posted here. The zoo is planning to break ground on this major complex this year and its looks excellent with exhibits for lion, African wild dog, Diana monkey, pygmy hippo, meerkat, vultures, zebra, small reptiles, and a walkthrough African aviary.

Wow it looks spectacular and it brings back some memories to me even though I haven’t been to the Tulsa zoo but the memories it brings back for me are seeing African wild dogs but at the Philadelphia zoo.

Piece of April 2024 News Worth Mentioning:

On April 18th, the zoo announced that 12 poison dart frogs (species(s) not specified) hatched.

The zoo will be welcoming two Asian elephants, 0.1 Connie and 1.0 Hank, from the Columbus Zoo later this summer joining the zoo’s current herd of 1.2 elephants.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Hank not only being a non behavioral breeding bull, there’s no reproductive females at Tulsa… and those 2 elephants they’re bringing to Tulsa from Columbus isn’t a multigenerational herd either. Personally I’m confused by this transfer but I also haven’t worked with these elephants to know what’s best for them so I’ll end on that note.

Frankly, not one to spread rumours, but I did have an inkling beforehand that the only facility realistically capable and perhaps interested in adopting this curio midlife bull and elder female association to its newly build facility.

From what I have gathered from earlier discourse on their elephant facility it was clear they have multiple areas for elephant groupings, so potentially they may have space beyond having a breeding group on site with a separate bull indoor/outdoor.
