Taronga Western Plains Zoo TWPZ Updates

I spent an afternoon out at TWRZ last Thursday. Very enjoyable. I went back the next morning for a quick drive around. I was hoping that the siamangs would be displaying so my daughter could hear them, but unfortuantly it wasn't to be.
P.S. Loved seeing the bongos.

Best time is around nine in the morning or at the keeper feed, kids love it and they never expect it...

I was one of the first cars through the gates. we stopped at the bongos, then went staight to the siamangs. We watched for about ten minutes but we had to go. Still had about four hours driving to get to a mates farm so couldn't stick around. Hopefully next time.

Ah, unfortunately the larger the group the more likely she is to call. you just weren't threatening enough. :) After a recent move to dubbo I have spent too much time watching them. They are amazing. She always starts with a drumming noise and if she's only doing it half heartedly then she won't call, if she's not drumming at all then there's no chance. but there's always next time

Couple of T.W.P. Zoo photos. Zebra foal, Bongo, siamang and Dora.

looks like his horn is finally starting to grow....

years down the track and i still can't believe that WPZ actually imported this species.

so excited!

Yes I noticed his horn is growing as well - yey.

It was a good move for WPZ to obtain the species, I am also excited about this species in the country and I hope that the plan to hold two pairs stills go's ahead, I also would hope Werribee or even Monatro would want to hold the species as well.

one lousy paddock with with two ancient chital - a decent group of blackbuck (i think they recently got more) and a breeding herd of mongolian horses.

i remember some years ago the blackbuck and chital were kept with water buffalo (that used to submerge in small pool) and sambar.

pretty sure they also had red deer and white-tail deer in recent times. though not anymore...

I think the only thing that would cause WORZ to develop a significant Asian focus would be a move of Asian elephants from Melbourne to Werribee.

yeup. i agree.

fortunately thats a given. since in about 3 years that exhibit is already going to be a little crowded. i have my money on logic prevailing and the females moving to werribee and melbourne keeping any non-breeding bulls born into the program.

my ideal would be for werribee to keep its current safari bus tour that runs through predominantly african exhibits and build a second asian themed safari that operates with a differnt means of transportation from a different location. ie - an indian river safari or a train..

we have all the indian animals already...
