Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #1

A female Amur Leopard should have arrived from Usti Nad Labem today (confirmed by Usti)

On twycross Facebook it shows work being carried out to enlarge the giant tortoise enclosure! It looks very nice, I'm impressed with all their developments!

I visited yesterday and was impressed by what I saw going on:

- Giant tortoise enclosure extension was looking very near to completion, with workmen beavering away on it all day.

- leopard enclosure looks great, been opened up well, but with a section in middle kept with a door presumably so the cats can be separated/put together as they need.

- wooden entrance up at the lemur walk through area.

- fencing started on the langur area. This appears to be an extension behind the current (boyband) langur area, and will cleverly use the lawn area between that enclosure and the orang area.

- new siamang enclosure open. Very impressed with it too. It is Danny and Tommy chimps old home and they've done a cracking job revamping it for the siamangs. It houses the family with the new baby and their juvenile. They were having a brilliant time, very relaxed indeed, all making full use of the equipment.

- baby gorilla looking very well, very alert and looking around from its vantage point of ozala s handbag.

Is there any info on what species will be in the lemur walk through and is it near the current lemur house?

Yes it's right next to the current lemur house, near the gorilla outpost cafe. Sorry I don't know what species will be in it.

Leopard

What is happening to the 'old' Amur Leopard enclosure now that both cats are moving into the Green Mile area? Will it be used for Dholes, Hyenas or a new primate house?

Personally I'd say it's too small for Dholes or Hyenas as it's not any bigger and possibly slighty smaller than their current enclosures. As for primates I think the enclosures too low and without a significant revamp (ripping out loads of vegetation to bring in climbing furniture) I don't think it'd have many climbing opportunities (bar the roof which doesn't really offer anything over and above most monkeys current enclosures).

I'd love to see the Yellow-throated Martens in there, but who knows?

baby Gorilla's sex?

He/she is two months old now but I can't find any reference to its sex yet-despite having looked on their Facebook pages where this sort of news tends to appear first. Does no announcement mean they still don't know?

Since the new lemur walk-through will be built close/adjacent to the lemur house, will the resident lemurs of other species also get a 'run out' and mix with the new Ring-tails? I know that all male groups tend to work best but it seems a shame that they've had to bring animals in when we've all talked for so long on here about 'freeing' the current stock into open air enclosures!

Ref the Lemurs it will only be the ring tailed that are in the walk through, I have heard there are no plans to mix, there were three ring tailed already at Twycross

That's a shame, Dudley has a mix in their great walkthru.

It takes time to set up mixed exhibits and often certain species will not mix, ruffed lemurs often being too aggressive! I don't think you can mix the crowned and red bellied together either as there may be a risk of hybridising! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product! :)
