Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2013 #2

hi I wonder if anybody could tell me the size of each langur groups or what reptile/amphibian species are in the bonobo house? thanks:confused:

Canaryboy in the Bonobo house, are the Aldabra Giant tortoises and the pair of Black-throated monitor lizard.

I went on Monday again, sadly no sign of the Amur leopards all day, the "Windows on the Wild" aviary was ripped at the top, just flying around in the wind, got a photo will get it up later, got a few more as well.

The walk though lemurs were no where to be seen, to the fact that the keeper got worried walked around 4 times then went though the bushes and there all hidden in there.

Think it was a Bonobo baby, at first the group was in doors (a few young in there too), this one was in a cage on his own at the back right. Later on the group was locked outdoors and the young one was in the full indoor area on his own, got photos and a video for later. Maybe hand reared and trying to integrate with group ??

Work was being done in the Dhole outdoor area (3 keepers the full day not out of there).

The borno longhouse netting that was lying in a mess, has been removed now, so not on the floor now looks better already.

That would be Lopori who is being hand-reared.

Except she isn't the youngest now.

Cool, thank you for that.

Great to hear the Bonobos will have a larger outside area paid for by a building firm, well done! Shame Kuno has been axed, never mind keep banking the dinosaur revenue.

Has Kuno been axed or postponed? Bad news if it has been axed completely, would've been a real boost for the zoo. I find it hard to believe they were advertising it all over the zoo a year ago only to scrap it, that is embarrassing!

Defiantly not going ahead, I cannot see a large investment at TZ for a decade, they need to carry on with small improvements, apparently they are spending out on a ball play area in the Himalaya and a kids area where the Dino's are. Not really for the animals?

Delighted to hear about the improvements to the outside facilities for the bonobos, very good of the local building firm to do this as a donation, I am sure the zoo are extremely grateful for this act of kindness as I am sure the bonobos will be, another example of the affection and respect the locals have for this zoo, another step in the right direction.

Was there any real chance of this Kuno ever materialising?, I recall notices plastered all over the zoo advertising it as "coming soon", just like the Molly Badham chimp complex or chimp choices or whatever other name they gave to this fantasy. I recall one respected poster of Twycross making it his business to enquire about the plans for Kuno to the local council, they did not even exist, and as another learned scribe stated, "this promise of jam tomorrow will not wash", wise words indeed. I agree that Kuno would have been an asset to the zoo as it would have brought back tigers and Asian lions to the zoo as well as new accommodation for the Dholes, the simple fact is there was no money to pay for it, if someone hadn't spent so much on fancy walkways, top class hotels and executive air travel and buying houses across the road at the zoo's expense then perhaps things would have been different, but you can't cry over spilt milk, with what ever surplus money this zoo may have in the future I think they are doing the right thing, improving the living conditions and housing for the animals that they currently have, the bonobo house improvements are another step forward for the zoo.

It is perhaps testament to the not so safe financial state of the zoo at the moment. It seems sensible to defer the project for now and focus instead on giving the present site a make-over and update the facilities in a presentable manner to the general public.

I take it that applies to any new 'Chimpanzee Complex' too:(- the chimps will now stay in their existing(improved) groupings in the three different houses for the foreseeable future- with the new project 'sometime/never' in the future? :(

Same for the Chimpanzees I am afraid. Not wanting to be doom and gloom but I do think that within the next 3 to 5 years many Zoos will be forced to close leaving the way for super Zoos. The general public expect more glitz and show biz that the majority of small Zoos cannot or do not want to afford. Make the most of what's out there everyone it won't last in my opinion.

So, are they going to continue to breed the female elephants through AI, or has that been discontinued? I'm sure all the efforts have proven anti-climatic for all involved. Should have invested in bull facilities :p

They have stopped using AI now as they are now in PC.And nobody has actually said that the Elephants are stopping at the zoo in the long term!

Surely Twycross wouldn't stop keeping elephants... would they!?!? They must be one of the biggest drawcards at the zoo for visitors, I'm not sure what effect that would have on the place long term.

Several thoughts occur here:

  • It is unethical by today's standards to keep animals of breeding age without access to breeding possibilities.
    • Elephants are very expensive to keep, and Twycross is obviously strapped for cash.
    • The present elephant house might perhaps be converted to house either gorillas or chimps

Where is the information about them extending the Bonobo outdoor area? What are they doing with it?
